À propos du lieu

Katima Mulilo operates as a riverfront border outpost connecting regional trade corridors.

The town takes its name from a SiLozi phrase meaning to quench fire, commemorating rivermen who extinguished barge embers before hauling cargo across the Zambezi rapids. Decades of administrative shifts transformed the post into a regional crossroads. Today, the urban layout reflects divided beginnings, with the commercial core flanked by the historic Nghweeze township and newer informal settlements.

Cross-border freight across the Zambezi bridge fuels the country's largest open market and an active export processing zone, but municipal utilities struggle to support the influx. The town water network suffers periodic shutdowns caused by utility debt, and unpaved residential streets lack public lighting. Active military installations encircle the perimeter, making photography of official compounds strictly illegal.

The regional airport handles scheduled flights from the capital, but arriving passengers find no taxi ranks on site and must arrange private collection in advance. Shared cabs provide transport within the center on fixed tariffs. Dense riverine forest borders the waterfront, where hippopotamuses and crocodiles populate the channels alongside local artisanal fishermen landing freshwater bream.
