À propos du lieu

Air transit on Yap Proper operates through a single airstrip in Colonia, connecting the state outward to Guam and inward to isolated outer island atolls.

The airfield in Colonia stands as the sole operational civilian runway on Yap Proper. Commercial international traffic depends on scheduled United Airlines flights linking the island to Guam. For outer reef communities, Pacific Missionary Aviation provides passenger and supply hops to remote airfields on Ulithi Atoll, Fais Island, and Woleai Atoll. Missing a scheduled flight disrupts onward travel across the state for weeks.

The current terminal replaced an older military airstrip built during the Pacific War. Naval task forces repeatedly raided the position before Japanese aerial units withdrew toward Palau. Modern operations focus entirely on regional connectivity, passenger transit, and emergency medical links for outer islands. Living in Colonia requires syncing work schedules, mail arrival, and supply orders with these limited flight rotations.
