À propos du lieu

Tokyo Camii anchors community life in Shibuya ward as the largest mosque in Japan.

Tatar and Bashkir immigrants from Russia established the original mosque and school following the October Revolution under Abdurreshid Ibrahim and Abdülhay Kurban Ali. Severe structural damage forced the complete demolition of that initial complex. The Directorate of Religious Affairs of Turkey directed and supported a comprehensive replacement, commissioning architect Hilmi Şenalp to design the current structure.

Artisans from Turkey handled the detailed ornamental work in the traditional Ottoman style, using marble shipped directly from Turkish quarries. The complex combines the main prayer hall with an adjoining cultural centre in the Ōyama-chō neighbourhood of Shibuya. Long-term international residents rely on the facility for religious services, cultural programmes, and community networking within an otherwise residential district.
