À propos du lieu

Yasaka Shrine anchors the ritual life of the surrounding quarter at the eastern end of Shijō-dōri.

Yasaka Shrine terminates the eastern vista of Shijō-dōri in the Gion district. Formerly known as Gion Shrine, the complex contains gates, an elevated stage, and a central hall. The site venerates the deity Susanoo as its principal kami, flanked by his consort Kushinadahime and their offspring deities. Walking routes link the courtyards directly to surrounding alleyways, making the grounds an everyday thoroughfare.

Imperial recognition defined the institution during the Heian era, when court messengers delivered offerings under orders from Emperor Murakami and Emperor Ichijo. Historical records trace the deity Gozu Tenno here from Nunakuma Shrine in Fukuyama. During the Meiji period, official decrees separating Shinto from Buddhism altered worship toward Susanoo, renamed the site, and classified it among top-tier government shrines.
