À propos du lieu

The Maximilianeum anchors the eastern end of Maximilianstrasse as a home for state parliamentarians and foundation scholars.

King Maximilian established the foundation to prepare gifted students for the civil service, commissioning Friedrich Bürklein to build a landmark above Maximilian Bridge. Structural load issues interrupted the initial Neo-Gothic design, prompting Gottfried Semper to alter the exterior. The completed façade features Renaissance styling with rounded arches, classical columns, detailed mosaics, and niches holding portrait busts.

Beyond housing students, the complex accommodated a royal page school and an extensive historical gallery before sustaining extensive damage from aerial bombardment. Workers rebuilt the structure to restore its parliamentary chambers and academic halls. Munich residents find an unusual civic reality where the regional state parliament conducts government business inside the same building that boards foundation scholars.
