À propos du lieu

Ernst Deutsch Theater stands in the Uhlenhorst district as a cornerstone of independent German drama.

The venue occupies a converted former cinema in the Uhlenhorst district of Hamburg. Founded in the twentieth century and named in honour of actor Ernst Deutsch, the institution holds the distinction of being the largest private playhouse in the country. Its stage programming focuses on contemporary literature and modern spoken theatre, maintaining an independent repertory schedule distinct from state-funded stages.

Residents staying in the city for extended periods encounter an active performance calendar dominated by contemporary German texts. Audiences attend regular evening shows in the central auditorium, where productions rely entirely on the German language without surtitles.
