À propos du lieu

Serekunda operates as the commercial core of the urban coast, shaped by sprawling street markets and dense residential quarters.

Sayerr Jobe established the original settlement on Sayerr Jobe Avenue after leaving the Kingdom of Cayor, cleared what was dense forest, and gave the area its name. The town later expanded by absorbing surrounding villages such as Dippakunda and Latrikunda. Today the municipality holds the largest concentration of registered commercial enterprises in the country, distributed across central, eastern, and western districts.

Serekunda Market, locally known as Sandika, operates as the primary commercial hub. The site grew from small roadside produce stalls into a dense labyrinth selling batik cloth, fresh fish, and electronics. Commuting farmers supply the stalls during the work week, though heavy seasonal rains regularly flood the unpaved alleys, and municipal cold storage infrastructure remains out of service, leaving traders exposed to spoilage.

The nearby coastal corridor around Kololi and the Senegambia Strip houses beachfront hotels, restaurants, and foreign nightlife. This zone contrasts sharply with residential quarters inland, drawing crowds of informal fixers and beach touts targeting short-term visitors. Long-term expatriates typically bypass the resort corridor, relying instead on shared route taxis, neighborhood bakeries, and regional SIM connectivity.
