Tenants in Vieux Lyon trade quiet streets for heavy foot traffic, living steps away from active concert venues and historic stone halls.
Architect Jacques-Germain Soufflot redesigned the structure to replace an earlier exchange hall that lacked sufficient trading space. The project required demolishing adjacent terraced houses so the front could expand and introduce a balanced central bay aligned with classical principles. Jean-Baptiste Roche supervised the construction, erecting a neoclassical facade that departed sharply from local building habits.
The interior features a rectangular hall covered by an imperial roof resting on massive pillars. Following abandonment during the French Revolution and brief service as an inn, the state assigned the property to Protestant worshippers. Distinct dials appear on the exterior, including a specialised dial that tracks days, months, and years. The hall remains protected as a historic monument and hosts public concerts.
