Commuters pick up groceries in the converted waiting hall market right beside the departure tracks. Long-term residents trade terminal bustle for immediate train links across the country.
Baltic Station functions as the primary rail terminal for the national network, handling most passenger train departures across the country. Construction began under the Baltic Railway Company to link Tallinn with Saint Petersburg and Paldiski. Builders erected the main terminal from limestone with tower extensions. Today the complex hosts the headquarters of Estonian Railways alongside Hotel Shnelli.
Armed conflict repeatedly reshaped the terminal. Pro-Soviet insurgents shot transportation minister Karl Kark on the platforms during a failed coup attempt, and retreating Red Army units set the main building on fire during wartime combat. Postwar rebuilding restored rail operations before planners repurposed the commuter waiting pavilion into a public market hall where residents buy everyday provisions.
