À propos du lieu

Banteay Kdei stands as a monastic enclosure defined by concentric stone galleries and Bayon face towers.

King Jayavarman VII built the compound as a Buddhist monastic complex over an earlier foundation by Rajendravarman. The layout follows the Bayon architectural tradition with towers emerging from concentric galleries, though it remains smaller and less intricate than nearby sister complexes. Outer enclosure walls surround the inner sanctuary, which sits directly opposite the Srah Srang reservoir.

Centuries of abandonment left the stone halls overtaken by dense vegetation until French conservators cleared the growth using anastylosis reconstruction methods. Buddhist monks continued to reside in parts of the temple complex during modern times. Japanese archaeological missions later excavated a buried cache of shattered sandstone Buddha sculptures and metal devotional objects from the temple grounds.
