Residents living beside Morro de São Bento trade modern commercial convenience for the strict acoustic routine of an active Benedictine enclave above the downtown grid.
Land donated by Manoel de Brito and his son Diogo allowed Benedictine monks from Bahia to establish the community beside the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. Construction depended on revenues from sugarcane plantations in Nova Iguaçu and Campos dos Goytacazes. Enslaved African laborers quarried stone from Morro da Viúva in Flamengo to erect the Mannerist complex, which later took the name of Our Lady of Montserrat.
Anticlerical legislation halting novice admissions brought the monastic community close to extinction before papal intervention introduced European monks from Maredsous Abbey. Under restored leadership, the abbey extended pastoral duties far beyond downtown contemplation, overseeing adult night schools, hospital ministry, and chaplaincy for naval garrisons stationed on Ilha das Cobras.
