Belgium's premier athletic arena anchors the Heysel plateau with a rebuilt structure dedicated to international football and track championships.

Architect Joseph Van Neck constructed the original arena on the Heysel plateau in a classical modernist style for the Brussels International Exposition. Originally named the Jubilee Stadium to mark the centenary of the Belgian Revolution, the facility hosted football matches alongside cycling events before workers removed the wooden track. A later synthetic running surface transformed the venue into a major athletics hub.

Decades of heavy use and substandard maintenance led to severe structural failures during an international club championship match, prompting a long continental ban on staging tournament finals. The tragedy altered European crowd management protocols and stadium architecture standards permanently. The grounds retained their athletic function during the penalty period, continuing to stage the annual Memorial Van Damme meet.

A total reconstruction replaced the crumbling terraces with a modern bowl, preserving only the historic entrance portal from the original complex. Renamed in honour of the late monarch, the current facility integrates a full athletics track around the pitch and serves as the primary home ground for the national football team. High-profile international fixtures and major concerts regularly fill the surrounding neighbourhood.
