Erebouni: ce qu’il y a autour, comment y aller et quand venir · 2026

Residents living near Arin Berd trade smooth paved streets for steep uphill climbs along basalt ramparts, looking out over the open valley floor instead of the sheltered city basin.

À propos du lieu

Urartian stone ramparts rise above the southern district as the earliest fortified core of the capital.

Argishti established the stronghold on the heights of Arin Berd above the river valley to secure the northern frontier. Builders assembled the defensive perimeter and inner citadel from volcanic basalt, carved tuff blocks, timber, and mud brick. Excavated structures within the circuit include a colonnaded royal assembly hall, storage rooms, a temple honoring Khaldi, and palace quarters decorated with wall paintings.

Later rulers Sarduri and Rusa deployed troops from the fortress during northern campaigns, maintaining the garrison as a regional administrative seat. Following the collapse of the kingdom under foreign incursions, the settlement became an administrative hub within the Achaemenian satrapy. Settlement continued without permanent desertion through subsequent imperial shifts, directly providing modern Yerevan with its name.
