Residents climb the hill path to find quiet above the city traffic, but remembrance ceremonies fill the entire ridge with dense crowds carrying flowers.
The complex occupies Tsitsernakaberd hill in Yerevan as the official state memorial dedicated to the victims of the Armenian genocide. During national remembrance ceremonies, thousands of people ascend the ridge to place fresh flowers beside the monument. International delegations, artists, musicians, and religious leaders regularly visit the grounds to pay formal respects during state visits to the capital.
Architects Arthur Tarkhanyan and Sashur Kalashyan designed the site alongside artist Hovhannes Khachatryan following proposals by Armenian historians Tsatur Aghayan, Hovhannes Injikian, and John Kirakosyan. Public demonstrations in Yerevan and unauthorized gatherings in Moscow prompted Soviet authorities to approve and complete the construction, creating a lasting symbol of national survival.
