About the place

Tallinn retains medieval stone fortifications that enclose the historic urban core.

Construction of the protective barrier began under the direction of Margaret Sambiria, producing the original Margaret Wall. Builders subsequently expanded and reinforced the ramparts across later eras. Substantial sections of the defensive perimeter along with multiple access gates survive intact, defining the historic center and helping secure recognition as a World Heritage Site.

Historic municipal regulations required local citizens to perform regular guard shifts along the parapets. Residents had to appear in complete armor to prove their preparedness against external attacks. Today these stone fortifications encircle the medieval district, shaping everyday pedestrian patterns and creating a distinct physical boundary between historic pathways and newer urban districts.
