Sobre el lugar

The Woolworth Building stands as a monumental Neo-Gothic landmark in Lower Manhattan. Its intricate terracotta detailing and cathedral silhouette define the edge of Tribeca.

Cass Gilbert designed the Woolworth Building in the Neo-Gothic style, drawing inspiration from the Palace of Westminster. The entrepreneur F. W. Woolworth selected Gilbert after admiring the architect's work on nearby office towers. Although originally constructed as a commercial corporate headquarters, the skyscraper later underwent conversion into private residences, maintaining its historic profile above Lower Manhattan.

The site opposite City Hall Park was chosen specifically for the commercial prestige of a Broadway address over quieter side streets. Woolworth enlarged the architectural plans to exceed the height of the neighbouring New York World Building across the park. The tower previously held the title of the tallest building in the world and continues to rank among the tallest structures in the country while defining the Tribeca skyline.
