Sobre el lugar

Andrew Carnegie reshaped the residential geography of the Upper East Side by building an estate far north of Midtown.

Babb, Cook and Willard designed the Georgian Revival mansion using brick and stone to house steel industrialist Andrew Carnegie and his family. Carnegie abandoned established Midtown enclaves after medical advice recommended open park air and natural light for his young daughter. The estate rose on northern ground that still held shanties and rural tracts, establishing a new residential enclave now called Carnegie Hill.

Carnegie purchased surrounding parcels in secrecy to shield his property value, reselling adjacent plots exclusively to approved buyers who committed to erecting matching grand residences. Neighboring industrialists and financiers joined the block, creating an architectural cluster along Central Park. The complex later transitioned into the Cooper-Hewitt design museum under the stewardship of the Smithsonian Institution.
