Sobre el lugar

Madison operates around a narrow isthmus wedged between glacial lakes, where state politics and a massive university define daily routines.

The city center occupies an isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. Most daily commutes run along dedicated bicycle paths, which are among the best maintained in the country. Metro buses serve the university and Capitol corridors well, but suburban routes run infrequently. Parking across the isthmus requires strict municipal permits, while campus enforcement patrols around the clock, making a car an expensive hassle downtown.

The surrounding lakes shape both winter and summer habits. During deep winter, Lake Mendota and Lake Monona freeze solid enough for ice fishing and walking commutes, though warm water near power plants remains fragile. Warm months bring agricultural runoff that feeds toxic, foul-smelling algal blooms. Invasive zebra mussels also litter the shallows with sharp shells, making thick footwear essential outside groomed beaches.

Autumn weekends revolve around college football, which clogs streets near Camp Randall Stadium with pedestrians and halts traffic until kickoff. The culinary landscape features supper club traditions, fried cheese curds, and food carts clustered along State Street. While violent crime remains low, local police strictly penalize street drinking, open containers, and public urination during major student gatherings like the Mifflin Street Block Party.

Preguntas frecuentes
How can travelers reach Madison without personal vehicles?

Dane County Regional Airport provides direct commercial flights from major hubs such as Chicago, Denver, and Minneapolis. Regional bus carriers link the university campus directly with Chicago, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis. Train passengers can take Amtrak service stopping in nearby Columbus, which connects into the city by road.

Fuente: Wikivoyage
Is public transit adequate for travel across the city?

The local Metro bus network serves the central isthmus, but frequency drops and travel durations expand toward outer neighborhoods. Personal vehicles become necessary for regular commuting beyond the urban core. Rideshare services and metered taxis operate citywide, though cabs must be booked in advance rather than hailed from the curb.

What safety precautions are necessary around Madison lakes?

Lakes Mendota, Monona, and Wingra freeze during the winter, allowing for ice walking and ice fishing away from marked power plant discharge areas. Invasive zebra mussels cover shallow lakebeds with sharp debris, requiring sturdy protective footwear outside maintained beaches. Summer agricultural runoff can cause toxic algal blooms, during which water contact should be avoided.

What parking conditions exist downtown and around the university?

Street parking across the central isthmus is limited and regulated by permit requirements, though municipal parking garages are distributed across the center. Campus lots are primarily reserved for university employees, and enforcement patrols monitor these spaces continuously. Significant road congestion and full parking facilities occur around Camp Randall Stadium during home football games.

What dining and beverage traditions are prominent in Madison?

Madison preserves the Wisconsin supper club tradition, offering classic regional fare and substantial beer lists. Street food carts gather on Capitol Square and near Library Mall for fast dining options. Signature local specialties include deep-fried cheese curds, bratwurst, and frozen custard.

How practical is cycling for transportation in Madison?

Madison maintains an extensive network of designated bike trails and ranks among the most bicycle-friendly cities nationwide. New-York

New York is an endless topic of conversation, a special world that, it seemed to me, lives by its own rules. It is also the most popular tourist city in the world. There are many places in New York that are a must-visit. But, unfortunately, I only managed to visit some of them. I will start, perhaps, with that tragic place known to the whole world – World Trade Center, where the Twin Towers once stood. Two fountains, symbolizing the tears and pain of the American people, serve as a reminder of those events. I think that anyone who has had the chance to visit New York will definitely visit this place. World Trade Center And how could I miss Lower Manhattan, Wall Street, and Times Square? Despite my limited time, I couldn't help but go there, and also take the opportunity to see the Statue of Liberty with my own eyes. The Brooklyn Bridge, all lit up, which connects two parts of the city – Brooklyn and Manhattan – left a huge impression. The narrow street of Wall Street led us to the huge bronze statue of a bull, which is the unofficial symbol of New York's Financial District and represents strength and assertiveness. Everyone strives to touch it for financial luck, which, of course, we did too)) Nighttime Brooklyn bridge Times Square is the most popular place in New York. A stunning sight – lights, advertisements, crowds of people, boutiques, theaters – Times Square combines all of this. I was amazed by the four-story M&M’s store with huge capsules of colorful M&M’s candies. I also really wanted to visit Central Park, Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, but I didn't manage to… Well, that's a reason to return to New York and definitely see the rest with my own eyes ))) Times Square – pure madness M&M’s – that's what I love)

I love this country

I had a day off once, so I decided not to waste time and head to Albany to their skate shop to buy some sneakers and a skateboard. Right before I left, it started raining, which bummed me out. While we were driving, the rain didn't stop at all and just kept getting worse, damn it. As soon as I got off the bus, the sun came out and the rain stopped—awesome. #ilovethiscountry So I'm walking down Madison Ave in Albany. I'm wearing a Hendrix t-shirt, and I've got him playing in my ears too. An African American guy, looking about 50 with a solid beard, is walking towards me. I pass by and catch him turning around and saying something out of the corner of my eye. I take out my earbud and hear: Where did you get this Hendrix t-shirt? So I explained to him that there's this little shop in Lake George. I told him I love Hendrix, he's playing in my headphones right now, and I let him listen to one. He listens closely and says: yeeah, that’s Jimmy! We laughed, shook hands, and went on our way. #ilovethiscountry(2) I get to the skate shop, and there's this talkative, kind salesman who helped me pick out everything by size and all that. I bought a skateboard and Converse skate sneakers for only $200. Baker, Girl decks, etc.—all for $50 including grip tape. #ilovethiscountry(3)

2 hours by bus - 18 hours by train - 14 hours on planes.

Finally, after such a trip, I made it to New York. Thank God, during my layover in Washington, I met two other outcasts like me from Russia who had absolutely no idea where they were going to sleep in the Big Apple or what to do at all. The shock started when we took off from Washington. That was when I saw the full scale of what was happening. We landed. The weather didn't seem the most favorable. However, despite the clouds and occasional rain, it was very hot—that's the local climate for you. We arrived at the Port Authority. And that's where the most interesting part begins. Broadway, Madison Square Garden, NY Subway. And this is my first trip abroad. Who would have known what I was feeling in those first few hours. We decided not to waste time and look for a hostel for the night. I found an ad for a hostel on Amsterdam Avenue. After giving a strange taxi driver 12 bucks, we walked into a lively hostel. After the question: “Do you have a reservation?”, we were a bit bummed out, as there were no free beds. A friendly African-American girl with a Muslim crescent and star tattoo on her arm started calling other hostels. After a long conversation, she said there were 3 spots at the Chelsea International Hostel. No choice, we took the subway there. The subway is a separate topic. A hundred times livelier than the Moscow one. Not in terms of the flow of people or the crowd size, but how people behave in the subway. It turns out that Chelsea is not far from the Port Authority Bus Terminal, where we came from. We arrived and checked in. I was put in a room with two German girls. When I arrived, they weren't there. I took a shower and just as I lay down to sleep, they came in. I said a few words to them through my sleep, something like: hi, i’m only for one night, and only for sleep. Hearing an 'ok' in response, I passed out. Morning started with rain. A proper, short-lived rain. I woke up before the girls. I lay there for a long time, then one of them woke up. We had a nice chat, I told her why I came and where I was from. And she shared her impressions of Russia in return; she had been to St. Petersburg once and complained about the terrible cold, talking about -16 with wind. And I told her that where I live, it even gets to -30. Then a nice breakfast. You walk up and get a bagel with jam, butter, and an apple, then you make yourself coffee or juice of your choice, you could also have cereal. Overall, everything is very pleasant and civilized. Next stop - Port Authority again, from where I am writing this post. I don't want to say goodbye to New York, I've ended up in a dream. But what can you do, it's time to go to Lake George.

Travel brings knowledge.

It was a period when a huge number of students were flying out. We were among them; on June 2nd, nearly 70 of us were departing. Everyone was very excited and tried to get to know each other quickly, realizing we would only spend two days in New York, yet everyone stuck together despite barely knowing one another. The mood was very positive, as some of us were flying for the first time toward independent life—even if just for a short while, it was a huge experience for them. Some were saying goodbye to family, there were many friends seeing us off, shouting well wishes for a great summer, and others were saying goodbye to their significant others. But after passing through customs, everyone felt a bit lonely for a moment, lost in thought, maybe even a little sad—perhaps starting to wonder what awaited them this summer?! But that passed quickly... Then the "selfie" phase began, photographing boarding passes, passports, and finally Instagram; that’s how our 40 minutes until boarding passed... We flew with Lufthansa, and what can I say, we liked it))) We didn't have time to get bored; there were movies, music, and a library the whole way. Students don't sleep on the plane, especially when flying to the USA. Everyone is discussing something; it's interesting to meet groupmates who didn't know all year that they were also program participants. It's good they met at the airport on the way to the USA; there were even cases where people met for the first time only on the return flight. And they were so surprised! Transfer in Frankfurt. The transfer was very convenient; we waited for only about 2 hours, quickly went through registration, spent half an hour in the waiting area, and then we were back on the plane, though not as active anymore—everyone wanted to sleep... When they announced we were approaching New York, we were fed one last time and asked to raise our seats and fasten our seatbelts. You could see the feeling of anticipation for something incredible on everyone's faces; everyone was so alert, so excited! The plane made a very soft landing, we taxied to the terminal for a long time, and slowly everyone started grabbing their carry-on luggage and moving toward the exit. John F. Kennedy International Airport is the largest international airport in the USA, located in the Queens borough in the southeastern part of New York City, 20 km southeast of Lower Manhattan. Can you imagine the traffic at the airport when everyone is waiting for permission to land or take off because there is simply no space, and an "airplane traffic jam" has formed? There were so many people at the airport, so many that it took us almost 3 hours to get through customs. Tip: If you brought fruit with you, please make sure to declare it on your customs declaration. Otherwise, you may be fined or detained until circumstances are clarified. This also applies to other products. After passing the check and collecting our luggage, we all gathered at the exit. A cool bus with a guide arrived and took us to the Hotel Pennsylvania. On the way, the guide told us about everything we saw on the road, about shops, groceries, car rentals, and even inexpensive restaurants and shopping. Hotel Pennsylvania, the location of this hotel is simply fantastic. Pennsylvania is in Manhattan, across the street from the Madison Square Garden sports complex, and was one of the most frequently booked in New York City! Times Square and the Museum of Modern Art are less than a 15-minute subway ride from the Penn Hotel. The hotel is also one block from the Macy's department store and 2 blocks from the Empire State Building. Midtown is a great choice if you are interested in landmarks, shopping, and museums. At the hotel, a girl was waiting for us at a separate reception desk with an "INTEREXCHANGE" sign. She quickly collected our passports and, calling everyone one by one, handed out room keys. She reacted very quickly to requests to change rooms and helped in every way she could. Even
