Sobre el lugar

Vladimir Shukhov engineered this steel diagrid tower as a lightweight broadcasting beacon during severe material shortages.

Vladimir Shukhov developed the hyperboloid diagrid framework to achieve rigidity with minimal steel. His design bureau won the competition to replace the Khodynka radio station following a defense decree signed by Vladimir Lenin. Wartime shortages forced revisions to the original plan that aimed to rival the Eiffel Tower. Builders assembled the tiers with wooden winches and military metal stocks without scaffolding.

Known locally as the Shabolovka Tower, the monument stands as an icon of the Russian avant-garde. The diagrid inspired an ASNOVA mural by Vladimir Krinsky and prompted Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy to write his science fiction novel about the Garin death ray. Outside the country, Centre Georges-Pompidou adopted the structural silhouette as an engineering exhibition emblem, while Amor Towles featured the radio mast in historical fiction.
