Sobre el lugar

Herod the Great built the citadel to guard the Temple Mount.

Herod constructed the fortification at the north-western corner of the Temple Mount, anchoring it to the eastern end of the city wall. He named the citadel in honour of the Roman general Mark Antony, who acted as his patron. The complex connected directly to the sacred courtyards by elevated porticoes, allowing Roman and royal guards to watch temple assemblies and suppress public unrest before rebellions could spread.

The Herodian citadel replaced the older Hasmonean stronghold known as the Baris, though scholars debate whether workers razed the earlier masonry entirely or incorporated its northern foundations. During the great Roman siege, Jewish fighters held the ramparts as one of the final defense redoubts before the sanctuary fell. Later rulers levelled the rock knoll during the Umayyad era, leaving scant surface remains.
