Plato gathered students in an olive grove outside Athens to debate ethics and mathematics.

The school evolved across successive intellectual phases under different leaders. Plato established the original institution, attracting scholars such as Aristotle, who trained on the grounds before launching the Lyceum. Later scholarchs like Arcesilaus and Carneades steered discussions toward skepticism, questioning whether absolute truth could ever be attained. This skeptical stance defined the academy for generations.

Philo of Larissa was the final scholarch with direct ties to the original Athenian site. Internal division deepened when Antiochus of Ascalon rejected skepticism in favor of Stoic doctrine. Teachers preserved Platonic thought through the Roman era, enabling a revived Neoplatonist center. That institution functioned in Athens until Emperor Justinian ordered its permanent closure, ending formal instruction on the grounds.
