New York is very expensive. Seriously, a single meal costs as much as I spend in a week in Minsk. But coming here without money isn't a problem – you can survive, and quite well at that. ⠀ I've put together a small list of places where you can go and have a great time. ⠀ 1. High Line Park The park's unique feature is that it's built on former railway tracks 10 meters above the ground. So, it's not just a great opportunity to "rise" above the noisy bustle of New York streets, but also to enjoy an oasis of nature in the heart of the concrete jungle. ⠀ 2. American Museum of Natural History Even if you're not a fan of "Night at the Museum," it's still a must-visit. Why did I include this museum in the "budget tourist" list? Because there is no fixed price. Visitors can pay as much as they want for admission (though the suggested ticket price is $22). ⠀ 3. Botanical Gardens Admission to the garden is free on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10:00 AM to noon. Additionally, on Tuesdays, you can admire the gorgeous orchid collection at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden for free. 4. Outdoor Cinema The most popular spot among movie buffs is Bryant Park, where mass screenings are held every Monday evening. Also, on Mondays, you can watch movies at Coney Island (right by the sea), on Tuesdays – on the roof of the Bronx Terminal Market, on Wednesdays – in Hudson River Park and McCarren Park, on Thursdays – at Brooklyn Bridge Park, and on Saturdays – on Roosevelt Island. ⠀ 5. Walking Tours You certainly can't walk all of New York, but you can thoroughly explore some of its neighborhoods by joining free tours led by enthusiasts. For example, every Friday at noon, there is a free tour of Times Square (meeting point – Times Square Visitors Center, between 47th and 46th streets). You can walk around the East Side on Sundays starting at 11:00 AM; the meeting point is at the corner of East Houston and Ludlow Street. A number of organizations conduct free tours of Harlem, Greenwich Village, Lower Manhattan, Central Park, and other notable areas, but you need to track the schedule of such events and register for them in advance. ⠀ 6. And I will finish with the irreplaceable square – Times Square I assume you'll hang out here for a long time. A gorgeous square with interesting things and popular shops like M&Ms, Disney, etc.

Houston. The largest city in the state of Texas. I decided to dedicate a whole page of my story to it. It's a beautiful city, no matter how you look at it. So, the next morning we woke up around 11 in Rick's garage, rested and ready to move on. We decided to make that day in Houston a rest day. When we woke up, Rick was still asleep. We never found out what he does for a living. I don't even know if he works anywhere. But he is a good person and very hospitable. We ate and went for a walk around the city. Or rather, we drove). I don't even know why, it wasn't that far to walk, but we drove to the center of downtown, parked the car, and went to look around. Downtown Houston is small but beautiful. You can really walk around it in 1 hour. Well, that's what we did. We looked at the skyscrapers, took photos, drank coffee, and decided to go shopping to see if we could buy something. We drove to the outskirts of the city to Macy's. I noticed later that these Macy's are almost the same everywhere. And I didn't see the point in hauling some item from Texas across the whole country. In short, we didn't buy anything there. We returned to Rick's place to pack our things and say goodbye, ate, and around 3 o'clock we headed towards California. Since, as I already said, this day was a rest day for us, we decided to drive until we got tired, somewhere until the evening, and then go to sleep somewhere in the mountains (we brought a tent, 2 pillows, and blankets with us). In short, that's what we did. We drove for about another 6-8 hours. And stopped not far from the city of San Antonio in the center of Texas, somewhere in the mountains. We stopped at a campsite. With the help of a GPS navigator, you can find anything, including campsites. You can't just set up a tent by the road in America, only in designated places, that is, campsites. So, we found a campsite and drove in. There were already several trailers there. We didn't find any administration there because it was already late, but we did find a notice stating that people who arrived at night should fill out a form (which could be taken from a box for forms), put money (about 30-40 bucks per car per night) and the form in an envelope, and drop the envelope in the envelope box. We did just that. With the exception of the last point. That is, we put the money in the envelope, but didn't drop it anywhere :). We decided that if the owners arrived, we would just give them this envelope with the money. Then, according to the old scheme, we took a shower (all campsites have quite decent shower rooms), had a beer, and went to sleep, as a very difficult day awaited us tomorrow.

Road to Houston, New Mexico September 7th 4 AM - I'm in this tongue-twister of a city. There's nothing to do here, as Sanya said, time is tight, and the 5:30 AM bus is convenient. Wandered around the night city a bit, decided - I'm heading to Houston. 11:15 AM - I'm in Amarillo. According to the ticket, it's a one-hour stop, bus change. In reality - we were 10 minutes late, the bus left. You'll have to wait 6 hours for the next one. In the end, I didn't wait and left on a passing one in 3 hours (it was coming from Denver), tons of people again. At 2 AM I'm in Dallas, walked around, took a photo of a cool green skyscraper. Finally, 20 hours after that difficult city, having passed the third one on my way, Buffalo, on the morning of September 8th I'm in Houston.

Houston, Texas Besides sightseeing, I needed internet to track Hurricane Ike, since I'm heading to New Orleans =/ I found a library, a really decent one; I spent two hours with proper internet and even took a photo of it =) I liked downtown too—the skyscrapers look like they were rendered in a 3D editor, all blue and surreal. The trams are cool, straight out of the future, push-pull style =) But the Houstonians have a problem with fountains and other water-based entertainment; they built some weird stuff on the tracks, and the central park smells like chlorine and is covered in foam. Everything is fine with the hurricane; they expect it to hit the Houston/New Orleans area in four days, but by then I'll be in Florida, where the danger will have passed. I like everything so far, I'm taking a 3-day bus pass (the 12:20 is sold out) to New Orleans. It's surprising that there are only 4 people on it =) The ride is incredibly pleasant; I've sprawled out across four seats in my sleeping bag.. =) So nice =D Falling asleep periodically along the way, I notice the swamps starting; they look like our regular mixed forests, only here, as they say, with crocodiles =) In a sketchy little village where we stopped before sunset, a local cop said a 14-foot alligator lives under the bridge =) I took a photo of the bridge, but the alligator only comes home at night... PS Before leaving, people scared me saying that psychos and criminals are always riding the buses. Well, today at one stop, a guy got on who spent the whole trip laughing under his seat, and a kid in a white jumpsuit with beacons on his wrists and ankles. They got on at one stop and got off at the next. First time I've seen that. And the last.

I knew almost nothing about Texas before this trip. Time passed, and little by little, I got used to my new life. From my personal diary: "I've gotten used to the fact that my weight here is over 100, my height is a little over 5, that calories aren't per 100 grams but per serving size, and gas isn't in liters but in gallons. It's usually about 100 degrees outside, and our car speed is about 50. And all these miles, pounds, yards, and Fahrenheit don't drive me crazy like they did at first. I calmly count coins at the checkout now, even though in the first few days I would panic, dumping out bills and praying that no one would ask me for change. Non-standard paper sizes seem standard now, and scales showing over 100 don't scare me as much. When a new acquaintance says they live 30 miles away, I have a pretty clear idea of how far that is, and if a river is about 2 yards deep, I understand that I can reach the bottom if I try. You get used to everything. And it's insanely cool and interesting." And in August, I confessed my love for this state by writing this post for Instagram: "It's impossible not to fall in love with Texas. It probably sounds strange to many, but it's true. When I found out that out of all the states in America, I got Texas, and I would spend my summer with cowboys in the desert among cacti, I burst into tears. I was seriously sobbing. But that was just my ignorance and a bunch of stereotypes in my head. Now I just thank fate that I am exactly here. Texas is the best thing that could have happened to me. Simply because it's amazing. It's the only state that truly has a history. A huge and great one (in the photo, by the way, is the Alamo - a Catholic mission that served as a fortress during the Texas Revolution. Now it is the most famous historical landmark in San Antonio, and perhaps the entire state). Texas is a leader in the country not only in area but also in population. In area, it is second only to Alaska (Texas is larger than many states, including any country in Europe), and in population - to California (the state of New York, for example, is in third place). There is incredible nature here, it's warm and sunny (not so much in the last few days, but in principle, it's good) and insanely beautiful. Sometimes I look at the passing landscapes and can't believe I'm in Texas. And the people here - you can't even imagine. Truly kind, open, and friendly. And freedom-loving, of course. I can't tell you everything, but this is an incredible place. Everyone dreams of coming to America and visiting New York and California, but few dream of Texas. And that's a shame. The Lone Star State. The state over which six flags will always fly. I'll leave a coin here just in case. Who knows, as they say." What did Texas give us? We walked around San Antonio, rode a boat, and explored the River Walk up and down, stopping in various shops and restaurants. We went to Mexican markets and wondered why everyone spoke Spanish. We visited the Bullock Texas State History Museum and the Capitol in Austin. We got up at 5:30 to spend a day off in huge Houston, and ended up spending the whole day at the incredibly interesting NASA museum and saw the Gulf of Mexico in Galveston. We walked around Austin at night, where there was madness in every bar and musicians were playing. We jumped off a cliff into a well that initially seemed like some kind of abyss. We went to the coolest restaurants, constantly tried new dishes, and once had dinner in sombreros. Musicians sang specifically for us, and we closed our eyes in delight. We rode the coolest roller coasters at Six Flags, went tubing down the river, walked through antique shops, and even visited a real university. I swam with two retrievers in the river and received dozens of marriage proposals. We fed zebras by hand and saw giraffes, played golf and bowling, went to the movies and museums, rode bikes, swam, sunbathed, watched fireworks on July 4th, went to a Baptist church, visited re
