Bethany Beach maintains a quiet Atlantic shoreline shaped by its origins as a religious assembly ground rather than a commercial boardwalk strip.

Disciples of Christ minister F. D. Powers conceived the settlement as an oceanfront educational assembly inspired by the Chautauqua movement. Organizers bought coastal ground east of Ocean View and erected an octagonal tabernacle to anchor services and town lectures. Unlike neighbouring resorts built around boardwalk nightlife, the community retains its restrained heritage with tight controls on liquor licenses.

Daily life shifts dramatically between summer crowds and quiet off-season months. Navigating town without a car is straightforward on foot or bicycle, and open-air trolleys loop between western residential streets and the ocean. Long-term visitors who drive must plan around strict seasonal regulations: side streets require residential permits reserved for property owners, while commercial parking areas enforce meter rates.

America is still there, or my first flight abroad

America is still here! Or my first trip abroad ever! So, Most people plan and try to spend their summer PERFECTLY. After all, summer is a sweet, three-month slice of life every year. My summer in America was the most memorable one. I had been dreaming of a trip to America since 2012, when I was a sophomore in college. Back then, my friends were already flying there for short-term summer language courses. Their impressions of America not only motivated me but also led me to take action and achieve results. After entering the university in September, I immediately registered at the International Exchange Center for the Work and Travel USA 2017 program in Almaty. We were prepared very thoroughly for the trip; we were informed and explained all the rules step-by-step, for which I am very grateful to our coordinators. Everything was planned by winter: where we would live, how we would get there, who our employer would be, and how it would all happen. And finally, after a successful interview with the consul in April and receiving my J-1 Visa, I boarded a Lufthansa plane for the first time in my life. After landing successfully at the New Jersey airport “EWR”, we went to pick up other students from New York’s “John F. Kennedy” airport. There were so many emotions inside; America was truly waiting and hadn't gone anywhere. Right then, on the way to the other airport, I felt the breath of the city, the rhythm where everyone is in a hurry and busy with their own business, where it is immediately clear that time really matters to them. After all, they say TIME IS MONEY for a reason. The grandeur of this city truly met my expectations. Everything is just like in the movies: skyscrapers, humidity, friendly people, and so much more. A city that breaks many stereotypes with its culture and population. In America, age doesn't matter; if a person wants to enter college for a bachelor's degree even after 25, it's normal for them. Back home, it would look like the person had missed their years of education. After we met the other students, we had a journey ahead to Bethany Beach, Delaware. We reached our destination on a shuttle bus from E-Point, a company that specializes in meeting and seeing off J-1 students. And here we were in Bethany Beach. We settled in, and in the morning, we went to the employer to meet the local staff of our restaurant. Everything went as planned: gifts and souvenirs from Kazakhstan, friendly attitudes, and welcoming smiles. Our team consisted of guys from Russia, Kazakhstan, Romania, and Macedonia. It was interesting to learn not only about American culture but also about Europe. Even on the busiest and hardest days, it was a lot of fun working with them.

Номер 4: «Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane»

Perhaps, if we don't count road trips to Crimea, I have never traveled anywhere as long as I did to my American destination – the tiny resort town of Bethany Beach on the East Coast of the States. 3 hours by car from my native Vitebsk to Minsk, 1 hour flight from Minsk airport to Moscow, a 6-hour layover at Sheremetyevo, a 9-hour flight to New York, an 8-hour wait for a transfer at JFK, and finally, 4 final hours – and I was there: the guys from E-Point delivered me right to the door of my new "home". But (!) all these seemingly endless periods of waiting for "weather by the sea," honestly, were worth the two short takeoffs and landings of the plane. I can wait indefinitely just to feel that funny numbness in my arms and legs again when the roaring giant rises into the air and smoothly descends onto the runway. You sit there, eyes squeezed shut, pressed into your seat, and your heart is pounding like crazy – you are completely seized by some whirlwind of anticipation for something new, a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach. What will it be like in an unfamiliar country? How will I be there? Will I manage? The stream of questions attacking the consciousness is endless. Favorite songs in my ears, in the backpack under my feet, a camera, a couple of books, a fresh Kinfolk, and a bag of coconut-covered nuts (you can only find those at home – it's a fact) – full "combat" readiness. I have a favorite battered notebook with sketches, dialogues for oral practice classes, to-do lists, and some notes so I wouldn't forget – this thing has been with me for more than one year and more than one trip. On the first page, there is a clumsy inscription in pencil – my peculiar motto, my state of mind: Wandering re-establishes the original harmony which once existed between man and the universe. Because it really is so, Anatole France didn't lie, guys. Only in travels do we find ourselves, so at any convenient opportunity – I pack my backpack and set off on the road. To meet everything.

Номер 5: «Who’s gonna drive you home?»

Gale-force winds, torrents of water from the sky, some blurry lights in the distance – hello, New York, we finally met! Not exactly how I imagined you, of course, but still. My heart is going 'thump-thump', my brain is like 'mission number 1 – find my suitcase among hundreds of others, mission number 2 – find the guys from E-Point who will take me home'. Is there anyone here who speaks Russian, hey? Control passed, stamp in the passport placed, mission number 1 successfully completed – the suitcase is with me. Mission number 2.. By the way, yes, E-Point is such a cool organization that handles literally everything related to a student's 'Work and Travel' summer at quite affordable prices: finding housing for the duration of the stay in the States, transportation to and from the airport, organizing trips to the most popular tourist spots in the country, and, in general, that's quite a list. There is a small 'but', this team only works on the East Coast with resort towns like Ocean City, Bethany Beach, Rehoboth Beach, and Easton. If you are heading to one of them in the summer, consider yourself lucky. From New York, they will take you right to the doorstep of your American 'home' – fast, with loud music in the speakers. I wanted to end on 'comfortably', but then I thought that this point is a bit questionable, so let's stick to the first two. Fast and with music – yay! This is what the 'E-Point' super-spacious all-terrain vehicle looked like, which we used to get to Washington in August. Finding their representative was not difficult: a guy with a huge white banner in a white t-shirt – everything branded – was standing with a cup of coffee right at the entrance to Terminal 1 of JFK airport and chatting with students already gathered around him. I approach, check in. Everyone is discussing something animatedly. I listen. And then someone suddenly asks me a question. I think, well, now I'll show them, did I study English for three years at university for nothing?! And somehow it didn't work, I didn't answer, I squeezed out some phrase at a schoolboy level, got confused, and fell silent. Does anyone speak Russian, guys? No one. A Czech guy in Czech, a trio from Romania in Romanian, a girl from Austria standing alone on the sidelines – where did I end up? And I had to wait an eternity for departure. The flight of the last group of students was delayed for a couple of hours, and we couldn't leave without them. You can't go outside – it's pouring rain, maybe eat something (I'd love some soup or potatoes with a cutlet) – fast food everywhere – and I couldn't swallow a bite, poke the phone – the battery gave up. I started wondering if I really like it here. After (attention!) 8 hours, we finally set off. In a small 'minibus' designed for 14 seats, there were 18 or even more of us sitting. Well, how 'sitting', we were barely squeezing against each other, shoving briefcases under our feet – we're moving, and that's fine, and good – everyone was too tired to pay attention to the inconvenience. 10 minutes after departure, we were already snoring peacefully to the sounds of American pop music, resting our heads on the shoulders of those sitting next to us. Soon 'home', soon 'home', soon.. Bethany!<3

Номер 2: «Tell the teacher we're surfin': surfin' U.S.A.»

I tried to make my summer of 2014 as diverse as possible: I spent a month working as a kindergarten teacher, a month sunbathing at the dacha, and at the very end of the season, my mom and I took a couple of weeks to visit the rocky Crimea. I greeted September happy, tanned, and rested. Perhaps everything happens for a reason. Perhaps it had to be this way. On September 9, 2014, I turned 20. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, and parents—everyone decided that money would be a better gift for such a grown-up young lady than some useless things that would just gather dust on a shelf. So, after this important calendar date, a fairly solid sum was added to my hard-earned pennies from the kindergarten, and I thought that if I tightened my belt and saved on chocolate bars during the school year, my American dream could still come true in the summer of 2015. I decided not to tell my dad about my plans (he had already suffered enough), but I shared my intentions with my mom: she agreed to help financially. After some time, my grandmother was also let in on our secret, and thus we formed a small, secret, female family community that worked very smoothly right up until my trip to the States. In early October 2015, my friend and I were walking through the streets of Minsk to the local office with the necessary package of documents for the program and excitedly making plans for the upcoming summer. At the office on Maksim Tank Street, we were met by a friendly girl who immediately asked which universities we were students at. Since I was a student at a language university in Vitebsk at the time, and my friend had already participated in international exchange programs, we didn't have to take an English test—they took our word for it that we knew the language. We explained why we wanted to participate in the program, what we expected from it, and asked the friendly office worker 1001 questions—we received 1001 detailed answers and a couple of useful recommendations from her, reviewed the terms of the program participation agreement, signed it, paid the first installment at the bank that same day, and in the evening, we celebrated the first step toward success in one of the central coffee shops in Minsk. Months flew by rapidly. We googled places we wanted to see in the States, looked for music festivals that were supposed to be held there during the summer—we planned, changed plans a thousand times, built new ones—we were completely absorbed by the upcoming adventures. Finding Job Offers was not time-consuming or exhausting for us: friends who had been to the States many times through Work and Travel contacted their employer, who agreed to take us onto their team. "Baja Beach House Grill", Bethany Beach, Delaware, hello! We continued to march toward success. There was very little left to do. In mid-March, with backpacks on our shoulders, we were riding the night bus Vitebsk-Moscow to take the final step on the way to the States—to get American visas. At 6 a.m., we were somewhere on the outskirts of the metropolis, and at 8 a.m., we were having breakfast in an empty diner near the Barrikadnaya metro station. We were terribly nervous. For the hundredth time, I was reciting to myself the 6 points of my rights from the American Pamphlet, and my Masha was scanning the list of approximate questions asked by consuls during the interview. Believe me, even if you have perfect English and you know your rights in the States so well that if someone woke you up at night, you would rattle them off without a single stutter, you won't be able to hide from the trembling in your knees and the "twists" in your stomach before the interview—everyone goes through this. At 9, we were shaking in front of the consulate doors, singing lines from The White Stripes – Seven Nation Army (this was a kind of anthem for our day): "I'm gonna fight 'em all. A seven nation army couldn't hold me back." At 9:30, the guard let us inside. After passing through numerous windows,

Place. House. People.

First of all, I need to tell you about the place where I live, where fate has brought me. Bethany Beach is a small resort town on the Atlantic coast. Honestly, at first, this place caused me panic and a desire to quickly get away to a more civilized state/city, but later I calmed down and seemed to soak in the ocean air and the tranquility of my American resort "village". House. 7 people (and all girls!) for one bathroom (!!! oh god), we live with an American family - a married couple who adopted two black children. It would be much quieter if it weren't for these little ones screaming at 7-8 in the morning.

America.I'm here!

23.05.12 Flights via Moscow-Milan-New York were exhausting but tolerable. In Milan, I felt somewhat uncomfortable; even though I started learning Italian, it was hard to understand almost anything. It was fun to watch it all—only Italians can chatter so fast! ) On the plane, I fell in love with two stewards; god, I was ready to stay in Italy. New York. Leaving the airport, I clearly realized that I would be comfortable in this country. This noisy city, always rushing somewhere, cannot help but leave a mark on your heart and linger in your memory. Time Square turned out to be such a small place, at least that's not how I imagined it. Along the way, we accidentally met a compatriot who works as a taxi driver and helps students like us get to our destination. I was well aware of such adventures, but in the end, he turned out to be a good guy; he helped us get to the hotel we booked before arriving in the States and even filled us in with other significant information. We reached the hotel, happy and tired. The plan for the evening—to walk through Central Park—failed successfully; we didn't notice how we fell asleep. The morning prepared other surprises—after missing the morning bus, not only did they exchange our ticket for the evening one for free, but we also managed to walk around almost half of New York in 7-8 hours. Bethany Beach. When the bus arrived in Dover, the first thing that came to mind was "wtf? r u kidding me? this is a village." And it really is a village, something like summer cottages where people come to relax like a resort. Pros: the ocean, silence, a break from urban routine; cons: the population consists mostly of pensioners driving cool cars (and I'm not kidding!), teenagers, and if you're lucky, you can find young people (if you're lucky!). greyhound.com - here you can order a bus ticket to your destination online while still in Russia.
