Now just a few interesting facts. For example, traffic rules are much simpler. There are no traffic cameras, though there are speed monitoring devices, but they are for the drivers themselves, not for the authorities. There aren't many road signs, everyone is very polite and lets each other pass, and there is more respect for pedestrians. People just cross the road anywhere without even looking at cars, especially in New York, but that doesn't guarantee your safety. And police cars are black with black lettering, making them very inconspicuous. Another fact: many people suffer from various illnesses, most often obesity. It's hard for people to even move around, so try not to get carried away and keep an eye on your diet sometimes, as there is a lot of junk food there. Almost everyone who lived in my house, including me, gained 5-8 kg over the summer. But don't worry, when you return to Russia, you won't even notice how you lose the extra weight. Elderly people are very different from our grandparents; they are covered in tattoos, drink beer, and eat chips, and many of them are bikers. But despite all this, they are very sweet, kind, and generous. Most men wear their pants sagging; it's not that important, but it really catches the eye. There are many young homeless people. Cigarettes are very expensive there; smoking is not cost-effective. It is customary to leave tips everywhere. Animals like raccoons and squirrels just walk the streets, and sometimes they even climb into houses. For example, this summer a squirrel climbed into our house on the second floor through a window and ate a chocolate bar. People easily joke about their president and make funny toys of him; sometimes these jokes are very rude. And most importantly, everyone is very polite, always smiling and asking if everything is okay. It's very pleasant, but it's not always clear if they really mean it or if it's just a gesture of politeness. At first, I was constantly asked why I wasn't smiling and if something had happened, since people in Russia don't smile as often. These are just a few facts, but that's all I can remember for now. This is quite a fluttering topic, since WORK is, after all, the first word in the program's name. At the end of the day, you reap what you sow, and your upcoming travels after the job ends largely depend on how hard you work during the summer. Besides, work is a great opportunity to feel truly adult, independent, and so on, and so forth :) Salaries vary on average from $7.50 to $9. Depending on the state and the position, these values fluctuate, but they generally stay within this range. Overtime (any time exceeding 40 hours per week) is usually paid at time-and-a-half, but no one can guarantee those hours. For example, we worked at a rate of $7.75, so every hour of overtime was paid at ~$11.60. Pretty good, right? Usually, we had ~100 hours every two weeks, and each paycheck was ~$600-700 after taxes and rent. I think that's very, very decent. Then, tips. When working as a housekeeper, you get significantly fewer tips than, for example, a waiter, but it's still not bad. In my opinion, dishwashers get even fewer tips, but to be honest, I don't know for sure. We did it this way: once a week we collected all the tips and split them. On average, it came out to $20-100, which was also a great little bonus to the salary. Tips are usually perfect for small purchases like fruit, snacks, cigarettes, and so on. In any case, if you work, and you work diligently, there will always be enough money for everything. A plus here is that working in a national park, there's not really anywhere to spend money ;) but online shopping can always help you out~ :)

Our new friends are burning a fire in a low rectangular grill. Cans of Budweiser are passed around in a circle - with the American flag - and small clay pipes - the smell of burning wood makes it impossible to catch the pungent sweet smell, memorable from the eternal hazy cloud over sleepy Amsterdam. Lera is twisting her can in her hands, Dana is lost, smoking cigarette after cigarette. I try to listen to the guys' conversation - and immediately get stuck in a pile of slang and interjections. Today one of the guys is flying to Afghanistan. The future hero is the biggest, the ugliest, the only one here - with a girlfriend. Getting bored, I take a "captive" - a native in the next lounge chair. I nudge him in the side: - Hey, they keep repeating "dirty", what is that? He thinks for a moment. - It means "good". My victim's name is Joe, and Joe has perfect diction and a wonderful sad smile. Joe says he is half Polish. I have to tell him that I have been to Poland, and that it looks like one big Buffalo. He thought about it. Meanwhile, Mike tells a sad story about a friend who met a truck driver who fell asleep at the wheel head-on on the highway: - I'll get a tattoo with his date of birth. We tell them that in Russia, you can get away with 4 years in a settlement for hitting a person. Deep shock: - 4 years?! According to our laws - 20 years. Cruel. - Nope, fair. I am tactless in any language. New logs fly into the fire. At the end of the evening, Joe friendly pats me on the shoulder. Americans are very non-contact, and such rare gestures should be valued. What else? Surprisingly, the morals in the American province are no different from those accepted in the Russian hinterland - everyone is terribly bored. Through the grapevine, Lera was surprised to learn that she, it turns out, is sleeping with Mike, and the three of us are weaving intrigues against Jess. It would be funny if it weren't so disgusting. Also, it is categorically not accepted to pay for girls. An unpleasant surprise for us spoiled ones. Mike even paid for Lera's cola with a creak, and she is, after all, the lady of his heart. A priori, almost everyone treated us very coldly. At work, we were sincerely considered stupid, and they tried to explain what a dollar is. We, in turn, tried to explain to them where Italy is. It's true. I am offended in my best feelings. It would be fine if we were ugly, but why stupid?! A stranger's soul is a dark place. You can not understand a person in any language. But I fell in love with the local cemeteries with all my heart. They regularly shoot movies there, and you can find tombstones two hundred years old. We lived near one. Once we picked a whole handful of wild strawberries there. And also - one of the saddest things I have seen in my life - three tombstones in a row: MOTHER 1923-1995, FATHER 1915-1981, DAUGHTER 1944-1952. That's how it is.

The storm of the century is heading for the East Coast! Hurricane Irene is approaching the USA! Judging by the weather forecasts and the images on the weather channel, Virginia Beach was right in the epicenter of the events. My hotel emptied out and closed, shops were boarding up their windows, and we taped ours up (just in case they shattered, so they wouldn't break into tiny pieces)... There were lines in the stores for water and food, calls from parents asking us to be careful, etc., etc. Our guys stocked up on cigarettes, beer, water, bread, hookah tobacco, and chips... in short, everyone was ready (13 people in the apartment). In the evening, it started to rain. Not a super heavy rain with hail, just a drizzle. We barely slept until morning, waiting for SOMETHING... By the afternoon, there was a serious sign of a hurricane: trees were thrashing from side to side, the howling of the wind outside gave us goosebumps, and the waves were slowly advancing up the beach. Everyone got tired of sitting at home very quickly: we aren't used to being stuck within 4 walls, especially without internet. Our brave Albanians suggested going outside... The idea was met with enthusiasm. We strapped large trash bags onto our bodies, put on clothes we wanted to wash in the rain, and headed out. On the way, we got slightly stuck in the elevator, which only made us laugh (yes... we are completely crazy). We stepped outside and all felt like Marilyn Monroe. The wind hit our bodies with raindrops, the bags puffed out flirtatiously... And my beloved monkey, of course, had the camera. We filmed the action of Hurricane Irene so we would have something to remember... And, as it turned out later, that was the extent of its power. Because by evening everything started to calm down, and by night it was just wind and just rain. The waves didn't leave the beach, even though alarmists predicted there would be a universal flood. Everything turned out fine, and I'm glad I have this experience now too. P.S. I read that another hurricane, Jose, is heading for the USA... we are waiting and hoping for the best :))

The Captain begins his story back from the Tyumen preparations. The Captain and his loyal companion bought themselves huge suitcases to throw in everything necessary (filling them less than halfway) and, without much emotional burden, set off lightly across the ocean. In reality, it turned out like this: on the last day before flying to Moscow, the Captain realized that, like, he was flying out tomorrow! The packing started at a store where a batch of Baltika 9 and Black Peter was successfully purchased. Arriving home, the Captain scraped together only the most necessary things (!) and in the end, the purchased suitcase (50 liters!) was packed to the brim. Having barely slept, in the morning the Captain and his loyal companion were awaited by a plane to the capital of our Russian land, provided by SkyExpress, but once on board, we found out that our airline's plane didn't make it to Tyumen that night, and we were being carried by another airline (I don't remember the name). Suspicions crept in when, at boarding, we were shoved not into a Boeing, but into a Tu-154, which the Captain hadn't flown in for frankly 10 years (O_o). Walking around Moscow probably makes sense to skip, as it has nothing to do with the subject. However, the last Moscow episode does need a description. On the day when it was time to leave the Russian land (or rather, the evening of the previous day), we headed to Sheremetyevo Airport. I must say that the train that took us there from Belorussky Railway Station (this outfit is called Aeroexpress) fully justifies its 300 rubles and brings you exactly to the terminal we need. So we arrived, and lol. We entered a practically empty airport; it was quiet, lights were on, long corridors, some rustling. Only after 200 meters was there a security post. Shooters like Doom 3 or Resident Evil immediately come to mind. After the security post, silence again, halls where no one is sitting; you just want to pull out a gun somewhere and start shooting someone. However, after all this atmosphere, through an empty long corridor, we exit into the central waiting halls and the whole feeling is lost :(. Departure at 6 AM, registration 3 hours before, we were at the airport already at 11 PM. The only entertainment you can come up with there is returning and running around these empty corridors, documentary filming, trolling security, and so on. In the end, when registration starts, you can stand in line as much as you want. The Captain recommends immediately taking a spot in line if there are check-in counters where no one is standing, but which are announced for your flight. Regarding contraband: TAKE A LOT OF CIGARETTES WITH YOU!!!! In principle, no one trolled us at customs about this, because as law-abiding citizens we took one carton each, but in reality, you can easily smuggle 2, and stuff the third into packs in different places of your luggage. If you are flying in transit (through another country), no one will give you your luggage at the airport where you will be transferring, so stuff everything you need into your carry-on. After Moscow customs at Sheremetyevo, you will be provided with a huge number of diverse (but essentially identical) duty-free shops. IMPORTANT! Everything you pick up at the duty-free, regarding alcohol, you must drink on the plane, because at the airport where you will be transferring, they won't let you bring the rest onto the plane; it needs to be checked as luggage, for which you won't have time. So don't pick up too much, and those flying through Rome with Alitalia – on the Rome-New York flight, you will be offered free wine and beer, with which you can get wasted and fall asleep. The service on this flight, by the way, is excellent. And yes, when you arrive in Rome (or wherever you arrive), you don't need to stand in huge lines, that's not where you need to go! You need to find the signs and arrows that say Transit, follow them, go through the metal detector, and calmly find your gate and

As I was leaving the museum, I noticed a young guy. "What are you doing here?" I asked. He pointed to a trailer shaped like a pink flamingo. "See that van? It's our shop. We travel, sell clothes and more. Come on, I'll show you." Three friends run the shop together. And for the town residents, they opened a small cafe. The young guy I met turned out to be a musician. After saying that, he ran off like a teenager to get his guitar to show off his playing to us... (In response, I played Tsoi's "Pachka sigaret" on his guitar)) But the main attraction of their shop for us became a hummingbird that suddenly flew in. Emotions were already overflowing after everything we had seen in the town, and as a thank you, we treated the guys to apples and gave them all the canned food we had saved for our lunch. That was the end of our visit to Slab City, where we just cracked open a window into an unknown world of freedom. This city is like no other. And it's hard to even call it a city... Slab City wasn't the last stop on our road trip, but it was the brightest. I know we will return to visit our new friends, but as I drive across the states, I now understand Americans who, even with enough earnings from a modest job to travel the world, don't do it. Flying through time zones, the scenery outside the car window constantly changed. Forests gave way to deserts, deserts to subtropical palms, and then the entire horizon was swallowed by mountains. I think every American understands how huge and diverse their country is, and that's why the American dream is most often not a dream of visiting Paris, but a desire to rent a car with a trailer to travel all over America.
