The institution originated from royal art holdings assembled by the Hohenzollern rulers of Prussia. King Friedrich Wilhelm established the dedicated Egyptian section following advice from Alexander von Humboldt. Architect Friedrich August Stüler designed its permanent halls within the Neues Museum.
