Art historians and long-term residents pace their visits across months, using quiet weekday mornings to study the Byzantine marbles without tourist crowds.
Ernst von Ihne designed the Baroque Revival structure for the imperial court. Originally called the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum, the institution was renamed to honour its first curator Wilhelm von Bode. The interior follows his concept of style rooms, presenting sculptures, paintings, and crafts together in shared halls to recreate the atmosphere of private historical collections.
The building houses the sculpture collection, the Museum für Byzantinische Kunst, and the Münzkabinett. Upper levels arrange Italian Gothic carvings, German works by Tilman Riemenschneider, and Prussian Baroque pieces along regional and chronological routes. Below, the Byzantine rooms display reliefs from Ravenna and early Coptic textiles, while the numismatic archive contains coin mintages spanning antiquity to modern times.
War caused severe damage when fires in an antiaircraft shelter consumed stored paintings and carved figures. Extensive postwar reconstruction restored the halls before UNESCO granted World Heritage recognition to Museum Island. Today the site operates as an active research centre, where art historians study contested items such as the controversial Flora bust alongside extensive cabinets of historical medals.
