Residents cross this vast pedestrian clearing daily to move between the commercial core and the quieter residential blocks of Ainay.
The square sits north of the Ainay district in the city centre, ranking among the largest open public spaces across Europe. Plazas in Bordeaux and Paris cover more total ground, but both allow vehicles across their surface. Place Bellecour remains the largest pedestrian square on the continent by excluding automobile traffic, leaving an uninterrupted open space that residents cross on foot when traversing the central peninsula.
Ancient river deposits originally formed an alluvial island here, supporting Roman military posts and boatmen warehouses known as Canabae. The land later transitioned into an archbishopric vineyard, deteriorated into swamp, and served as military pasture during civil conflict. Royal ownership eventually transformed the meadow into a formal royal square, enclosed by uniform building facades designed by architect Robert de Cotte.
Political upheaval repeatedly altered the plaza during the French Revolution, when authorities set up a guillotine, destroyed the royal monument, and rededicated the space to civic equality. Napoleon Bonaparte subsequently laid foundation stones for replacement buildings following his military victory at Marengo. A restored royal statue returned later, and the site only secured its current name under subsequent republican rule.
