Artists and researchers based here trade modern campus amenities for studio life beside the historic Lamberg-Sprinzenstein collection on Schillerplatz.
The institution began as a private academy established by court painter Peter Strudel on Italian and French institutional models. Following imperial reorganisation under Director Jacob van Schuppen and reforms under Empress Maria Theresa, State Chancellor Wenzel Anton Kaunitz united the separate art and engraving schools into a unified academy.
The main seat stands on Schillerplatz along the Ringstraße development, constructed to designs by architect Theophil Hansen with ceiling frescos by Anselm Feuerbach. The art collection relies fundamentally on the private bequest of Anton Franz de Paula Graf Lamberg-Sprinzenstein, which remains central to public gallery exhibitions.
Academic admissions shaped modern political history when professor Christian Griepenkerl rejected the application of Adolf Hitler. Under subsequent German annexation, racial laws forced expulsions across the faculty and student body. The reconstructed institution later attained university status without adding the term to its official title.
