Über den Ort

West Point operates as an active military post and academic institution.

West Point stands as the oldest continuously occupied military installation of the national army. Troops established the defensive post during the Revolutionary War to hold the high ground commanding the river passage. The strategic position prevented hostile naval ships from navigating inland and cutting off regional supply networks.

The site shifted from purely defensive artillery works into an institution for educating future commissioned army officers. Academic leadership modeled early curricula on polytechnic standards to produce specialized technical engineers. That focus directed the development of major domestic bridges, roadways, and rail paths.
