Donated royal gardens formed Seville's primary green refuge, combining French landscape design with monumental exposition architecture.

The grounds originated as private gardens attached to the Palace of San Telmo before the Infanta Luisa Fernanda, Duchess of Montpensier, donated the estate to Seville for public use. The site stretches beside the Guadalquivir River to form the primary municipal green expanse. French landscape designer Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier later reshaped the private estate into structured public avenues and shaded promenades.

Architect Aníbal Gonzalez directed park construction to prepare Seville for the Ibero-American Exposition, incorporating exhibition spaces across the grounds. Plaza de España formed the centerpiece of this development as a monumental semi-circle enclosing fair administration offices. The ornate brick pavilions subsequently attracted international film productions, providing the cinematic setting for Lawrence of Arabia.
