Residents route daily walks around the eastern fortress wall because the central gate remains shut to commuter vehicles, reserving passage for state motorcades and official ceremonies.
Italian architect Pietro Antonio Solari erected the structure under orders from Grand Prince Ivan the Great. Originally designated the Frolovskaya Tower after an early fortress church, the landmark took its enduring name from Saviour icons mounted over the gate and painted along the outer masonry. Architects Bazhen Ogurtsov and Christopher Galloway later added the tiered hipped roof, whose integrated chimes define official time.
Fortifications evolved through an arched stone bridge across the moat and defensive redans before Soviet authorities replaced the imperial eagle with a red star. Routine vehicle transit through the archway ceased when traffic disrupted pedestrian movement near department stores, converting the entrance into a restricted ceremonial portal. The gate opens exclusively for official parades and presidential motorcades.
The surrounding citadel grounds shifted from administrative isolation into a public museum complex under Nikita Khrushchev, eventually securing World Heritage status. Several historic cathedrals within the walls conduct religious services intermittently while operating as state museums. Recent archaeological excavations beneath nearby grounds uncovered the buried structural foundations of demolished medieval monasteries.
