Ural: was in der Nähe ist, wie man hinkommt und wann man fährt · 2026

Settling on the eastern side of the ridgeline exposes long-term residents to biting Siberian air currents, whereas western slope valleys catch Atlantic moisture and stay marginally warmer.

Über den Ort

The mountain range separates European plains from Siberia and dictates regional transit corridors.

The spine runs between two continents, reaching from Arctic waters toward Central Asian steppes. Settlements took shape around river passages and industrial extraction points. The terrain shifts weather drastically across its crest, so moving between the western and eastern flanks means trading ocean clouds for sharp continental cold.

Early commerce centred on northern waterways and the fur trade before central authorities established crossing points into Siberia. Industrial operations expanded around ancient copper and iron sites, creating metallurgy settlements along the foothills. The ridges still form a sharp operational boundary for transport lines.

Settlers and travellers contend with steep precipitation gradients across short distances. Summer yields the main rainfall window, while Siberian high-pressure zones bring dry winters. Towns established near historical smelting sites continue to function as regional anchors along the eastern and western foothill valleys.

Fakten
  • The mountain chain forms the conventional boundary between the continents of Europe and Asia.
  • The islands of Novaya Zemlya and Vaygach Island represent northern continuations of the range in the Arctic Ocean.
  • Babinov's road was built from Solikamsk to the valley of the Tura, serving as the official crossing to Siberia.
  • Western slopes receive more annual precipitation than eastern slopes because the peaks intercept Atlantic clouds.

My story.

I sit and look out the window at the falling snow And think about how I can make a breakthrough, One like those two unknown eccentrics, Who broke away from the Soviet Union to New York. And in their pockets, eight bucks for the two of them And a bunch of rainbow hopes and dreams, Enough for great success. I sit and look out the window at the falling snow And think about how somewhere far away, Ten thousand kilometers away, Where the Atlantic is, and bays, and inlets, And territories with a four-century history; There are palm trees there, and skyscrapers, And even beaches amidst the concrete and glass. There are Chinatowns and Little Italy, Or you can just call it a neighborhood. There is the Statue of Liberty with a torch in her hand And a waterfall that gives the city energy, And the White House, and the Grand Canyon, and the state of Nevada. I will see all this, not in a dream! Hello, everyone reading my story! My name is Tomiris and in exactly 20 days (as of this writing) I will be 18. I am a first-year student of the West Kazakhstan Innovative Technological University in Uralsk, Kazakhstan. In the future I will become a specialized translator. Since childhood I liked studying languages, their features, noting the beauty of each, but I was especially interested in English. I began to learn it from the age of seven years and participated in many competitions, both in the city, and in the national. In grade 11 I dreamed of going to America, and began to prepare hard for the international exam IELTS in March 2022. I got 5.5 points when the threshold was 6.0. But I am not discouraged, I took the experience with gratitude because I improved my English to the upper-intermediate level while preparing for the exam. I think that today it is one of my most important achievements: an official confirmation of my knowledge by the British Council. Further I hasten to inform that by the time I am years old, I already have quite a good experience in the HoReCa sphere. In tenth and eleventh grades during summer vacation I worked as a waitress at a food court and, even in that position, I successfully used my knowledge of English while communicating with English-speaking guests at the establishment. Why did I decide to participate? Last May my brother Darkhan flew to America, Massachusetts under the Work&Travel program through your company and I was inspired by the idea. I started reading stories of guys from all over the world about their trip, what interesting people they met there, how they realized their dream, some even stayed to work there. This is my first reason for wanting to go there: to get to know their culture, customs and traditions, and to talk about ours. This program will allow me not only to earn money, but also to explore the country, make friends from all over the world and traditions, and to talk about ours, to explore the country, make friends from all over the world and gain professional experience. Secondly, but no less important reason, to study English in more depth, communicating in it with native speakers, and considering that there are so many accents in the U.S. language as there are people living there, this experience is absolutely invaluable. Thirdly, all of this learning can be combined with work, as I will have to constantly be in that environment with only English spoken around you. Moreover, I will get and develop my new skills in order to develop competencies in different areas, I have a goal to earn decent money or capital that will help me to pay for my studies and make my parents happy. I want to give them everything they gave me. They have always believed in me, supported all my endeavors and been there for me. I want them to be proud of me. And most importantly, being in the United States, I will be promoting my country's recognition, culture, traditions, and customs. After all, my country is the 9th largest country in the world! Also, if I have a chance, I will participate in official, cultural, s

Now and in the Future

Now and in the future What I know about youth travel? Youth tourism is a special type of travel, when young people prefer to relax in large companies united by a common goal of exploring the world and spending leisure time. It has a significant influence on the development of a young person as a worthy and harmoniously developed citizen of his country. My funny story Once while traveling , I found guys from my country on social networks who traveled in the same city where I was .It was a rainy day and I had a raincoat and a huge backpack. The moment I got off the subway , I get my phone and started texting them to set up a meeting place .Suddenly I heard two guys talking in my native language, one of them asked the other "how do you spell McDonald's"?When I looked at them, our eyes met.It was raining and I couldn't see them.Since we were all in raincoats.I smiled and went on looking for wifi to write to those guys from my country. When I found the wifi and texted them, they said they were at McDonald's!I laughed and went there. And I saw those guys on the road .It was funny to see them there. Why I want to participate in this program? The most important goal of my participation in the program is travelling and culture exchange. An opportunity to see America at such a young age. This program allows us to be happy and spend our youth traveling and being free .To be so free and not be afraid of other people's judgments. Taking part in an international cultural exchange increases the students' chances of employability, but it also helps us gain skills for their future jobs. Employers value virtues such as adaptability, cultural awareness, tolerance and so-called “transversal skills”. A person must have dreams come true. Many people dream of traveling.I dream of visiting all continents. Get acquainted with the cultures of peoples who live in different parts of the world. See the ocean. Swim in all the seas of the world. See the coldest and warmest countries. I will bring souvenirs and memories from my travels. Be sure to share your impressions with friends and relatives. Perhaps they will also get carried away with my dream. And then we will travel in a friendly company of like-minded people. Returning home, you bring with you a piece of the place you visited. And it stays forever. Sharing my culture Kazakhstan is a multinational, multicultural country. But despite such a mixture of cultures, each nation of Kazakhstan carefully preserves its own cultural traditions and customs. I want to take our traditional clothes and jewelry with me when I go to the United States to show the world how beautiful our culture is.Even in our country I try to wear our traditional clothes, hats and jewelry. My friend has a traditional jewelry store, I support and help her with her business . I am glad that our young people are so proud of our culture. How participation in the program will help me in my future career? My profession is a teacher of two foreign languages: English and Turkish. We have a similar culture with the Republic of Turkey, so it will be quite easy to teach Turkish. But I also need to teach English. The language of a country that I have not visited and have not felt the atmosphere of this country. That's why I want to take part in this program to experience this moment filled with knowledge that will help me reach the very top of my career. So that my students in the future can speak this language fluently and travel the world without a language barrier. I will tell them about my story and motivate them to know this language in the best quality and be eager to see this wonderful world. After all, traveling gives us happiness and an immeasurable amount of cool moments, experience and knowledge. What can be improved in exchange programs? I asked my brother, who participated in the Work and Travel 2022 program, what he would like to change in the program, and friends who visited America thanks to this program.I have identified several of their pr

The impact of travel on young people

Dear Members of the Selection Committee, My name is Suttibaev Marat and I am a third-year student in Auezov South Kazakhstan University at the faculty of Philology. My specialty is teacher and translator of foreign languages: two foreign languages that are English and Korean. I am elated to seize this unique opportunity which will expand my valid education and build new chances for my future career. I am incredibly interested in going to America because of its multicultural environment, wide range of services to find a job and friendly society. As I always planned to spend some time abroad during my studies, I started to investigate “Work and travel” programme from my university time. I am eager to get insight into American culture, learn new perspectives, get experienced and exchange ideas with different people all over the world whom I will meet there. The reason is it is important for me to understand cross-cultural differences and improve international communicative skills. Therefore, I passed exam to enter South Kazakhstan University from my hometown Tashkent in Uzbekistan. Now, it is my aim to go abroad, exactly to America. I am sure that I will get the best experiences as I am foreign student here and have such a life of foreigner. However, going to America by this programme is another degree of exchanging thoughts and changing mindset as well as for me and future generation that I will teach and lead to be open to the world. Therefore, I participate constructively in all the studies and meetings with foreigners in Kazakhstan. This is the second reason that motivates me and helps to keep my eyes on this opportunity. As I am following this programme, I know that I can trust you entirely for all the process and even results of your work. I know that you do your best from the contacting with candidates till their coming back to the country. You give teaching lessons, stay connected with both sides candidates and employers during all the period. You do the arrangements and help applicants during all the stages of accomplishment of it. Therefore, over 4,000 people believe you and can rely on you to be with you in the pass of becoming practiced during 10 years from the foundation day. I am confident to have an excellent command of English-speaking people which would enable me to get on well and adjust easily. As my first experience as a foreign student was back in the autumn of 2019, I can admit that I am sociable, hard-working, reliable, self-assured, and open-minded. Such characters of my nature helped and still does to become the best of me no matter where I am. I can get on well with easy in new environment and make a lot of friends not only where I live but also with foreigners both in online and face-to-face meetings. It would be a pleasure and an honour to represent my home university and my country during three months at the America. I hope using this chance to go abroad and exchange with culture. I am sure that I will stay connected with people from America even my back to the country that will help to increase multicultural connection of our country. There are many people who come to the America from all over the world and staying in connection with them will enable me to open my own center that will help our future generation go to work or study not only to America but also to other countries constantly. I briefly believe that with me ambitious and experiences right from the day I go to America I can stir to action and help others to apply and become successful in what they want and do. Moreover, I will be able to implement new ideas and suggestions for the commercial and qualitative development of our country and I will show all the best sides, features of our country that exactly will empower our country to be a developed country. Finally, I would admit that I am extremely self-motivated and once I set a goal, I strive to achieve it. I have committed meetings with international people on numerous occasions and I

Номер 10: Washington state of mind

Washington in five words: heat, art, free, silence, and running. That is exactly how I remember it. National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden All students coming to the States for the summer can be roughly divided into two categories. The first are those who earn money for crazy trips around the country; the second are those who slave away at three (I'm exaggerating) jobs without days off to take all their earnings home. My Czech friend Michael and I were somewhere in the middle. Neither here nor there. We worked 14 hours a day and dreamed of getting away somewhere, but it just didn't work out: either our days off didn't coincide, or the weather spoiled the fun, or we just wanted to sleep in. In August, realizing that if we waited any longer, our dreams would go down the drain, we decided to act. Where to go? "W" - Washington - it's close, interesting, and budget-friendly. Still the same National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden After going through dozens of possible "how to get there" options, we settled on E-Point. 60 dollars round trip – at 9:30 AM you are at your destination, at 10 PM you are back in the center of our native Bethany – perfect. The first thing we noticed upon arrival was how quiet it was all around. I was prepared to see colorful crowds of people rushing everywhere as soon as I got off the bus, but in the end, the only semblance of a crowd that caught my eye was a group of toddlers that an attendant was vainly trying to get to move in the right direction. People, where are you? Going to Washington for 1 day is a bit of a stretch. We rushed around the National Mall, trying, as they say, to grasp the ungraspable. The phrase of the day became "come on, faster, we still need to make it there." National Museum of Natural History, National Air and Space Museum (must see!), Smithsonian American Art Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Capitol, White House, National World War II Memorial – we ran through all of this as fast as we could. Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum At the National Museum of Natural History, I spent a long time reading the information on the billboards dedicated to the ocean and the origin of life on Earth - tired of waiting, Michael came up with a great thing: "Listen, do like the Chinese: take photos of everything, and you'll read it at home, come on!" I admit, for lack of another choice, I did just that later on. It's embarrassing, but what can you do. Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History Most of the time was spent at the National Gallery of Art. Expecting to run through it in an hour, once we got inside, we immediately realized that we would fail this mission, gave up on everything, and began to slowly move from hall to hall with our mouths open. Monet, Van Gogh, Da Vinci, and Warhol – could I have even dreamed of this? At five in the evening, we felt as if we had walked a hundred kilometers in the desert – we wanted to lie down on the grass somewhere and not move. And we also wanted to eat. By the way, about food. For a whole hour, we wandered around the National Mall, trying, as it turned out, absolutely in vain, to find at least one working stall with burgers and hot dogs. Five o'clock is the approximate closing time for all the Mall's attractions, and "food," as I realized, works on the same schedule. We sadly remembered how in the morning, to lighten the weight of our backpacks, we stuffed the leftovers of our packed lunch into ourselves – fools! Who knew. My advice to those who are going to visit Wash – go to the city for a couple of days. Without thinking. It's worth it. And plan in advance what exactly you want to see, because the number of museums collected within this place can drive you crazy. There is an outlet here for absolutely everyone, whether you are a creative soul or a fan of ancient history. And yes, no skyscrapers or shocking buildings – all Washington buildings are elegantly strict, as if to say, look, I'm neo-Got

Important tips. Part 2.

Some boring important tips. Part 2: Travel: Guys, please, never leave home to travel without having a grand plan for how it's all going to go! 1. When there is about 1 month left before your flight home, start planning your trip. 2. Talk to your employer, notify them of your wishes well in advance so they don't get such a "surprise" a day before your planned trip. 3. Ask yourself "what do I want to see?" and mark those places. Plan at least 1-2 days for each place to fully soak in the atmosphere of your desired destination and live there like a regular American. How to travel? 1. It is more profitable and fun to travel in a group. Many tour operators offer discounted prices if you buy for 2 or more people. Below are some sites where you can look at various tours to any point in America. http://www.taketours.com/usa/ http://www.tours4fun.com/ http://www.ustours.biz/ 2. If you are a fan of independent and unpredictable/exciting trips, then arm yourself with a phone with internet access, more money, and sites like www.couchsurfing.com 3. Take warm clothes for the road. Who knows where you will have to spend the night. And in American buses, the air conditioning works so well that you start to be surprised that a Russian person, even from the Urals, is freezing in the USA. My example: I am giving my own example so that you can take a few points on board, so you don't make some mistakes, and sometimes make desperate moves like I did. I was so busy working that I didn't even notice September approaching. With this month came the sadness that soon all this life would be left far behind. Lesson: You are going to the USA not only to work! On August 24-26, I finished my jobs, told my managers that it was time for me to go "Discover America". It was 2-3 days before, so everything was in a rush. The last days at work were slightly melancholic, it was hard to realize that I had to part with colleagues, there were farewells and wishes, hugs, tears... Lesson: it would have been good if I had gone to the USA together with someone from Russia – there would have been company. I probably tripled the number of visits to the above sites during those days. Everywhere the tours were expensive, because I was alone. Searching for people on the internet who also want to travel on these days was unsuccessful. Lesson: Therefore, look for everything in advance and plan everything in detail! On the penultimate day of departure, I realized that I had nothing to take photos of the places I would visit. 2 hours before departure, I am standing in BestBuy and torturing the consultant with questions about what is better between Canon and Nikon. I choose Nikon and rush home with a big box in my hands. Lesson: I shouldn't have broken my phone/or I should have bought a camera in advance! I should have asked someone to drive me home. The tour started somewhere in Chinatown in NYC very early in the morning. Lesson: it is important to think about where you will spend the night in NYC before the start of the tour. In my case, it was McDonald's in Times Square with some guys from Bulgaria. Thanks to Mac for the roof over my head. After the tour of the East, I planned to fly to the West. I bought the tickets "in advance" again and it cost about $800 round trip. Since I didn't have a phone, I needed at least something to contact friends who were worried about me. I bought a TracFone in some small store – a mobile phone with limited talk minutes. You buy minutes – you talk. This was a last resort, because there was no time to buy a normal one. To contact my parents, a friend lent me his mp3 player, which could access the internet. Lesson: Never make such a mistake! In the end, I probably spent more money buying extra minutes for the TracFone than on buying a new one.

CONQUERING DEVIL'S PEAK

Ira left for Egypt almost a week ago to relax and meet up with her mom. Stas and Kirill were working, so the four of us—Nick, Katya, Kristina, and I—were planning to climb the mountain. But Kristina was out partying with friends until late last night and didn't get home until 5:30 AM. And Katya got moody, saying the summit was covered in clouds and visibility would be poor. In the end, Nick and I set off to conquer it on our own. It's interesting, I write "summit in the clouds"... What can one understand from that phrase? After all, summits veiled in clouds over different mountains in different parts of the world look different. For example, on the Perya or Kruglytsa mountains in Taganay, Zlatoust—our Ural mountains, which are not inferior in height to many local ones—I have never seen such a "summit in the clouds" as I often observe on Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak, and the Twelve Apostles mountains (in the photo on the right). Ours are... somehow different. Not better, not worse, but in their own way. And how is it here? Every time I manage to see this miracle, I associate it with a giant paw made of clouds. This paw is often below the summit. The cloud drifts, crashes into the mountain, rises, rounds it, sliding down a bit with a light but viscous mass—to the altitude from which it drifted—and, as if nothing happened, continues to move on. An incredible sight! Today I conquered the third summit in the city, after the 350-meter Signal Hill and the 670-meter Lion’s Head. We climbed the multi-peaked one, and to the highest of its peaks, Devil’s Peak. A kilometer into the sky! To tell the truth, I expected less from this mountain. People don't climb here as often as they do on Lion’s Head and, especially, on Table Mountain—the highest, most beautiful, popular, and, finally, the most civilized mountain in these parts. They say there is even a restaurant at its summit. And to get to the top—the only one among local mountains—you can go up, and then come down, by funicular, in a cable car. I think that's exciting! Why haven't I been there yet? you might ask. I'm savoring the pleasure! I'm saving the sweetest for "later"! I plan to go up there with Vitka when he arrives in January, if everything works out with his visa. My invitation reached him, he bought his plane tickets, now all that's left is to send the documents to Moscow, to the embassy, and wait for the visa. Back to Devil’s Peak: the road was tiring and long. Even after driving to the very foot of it, we spent seven hours on the ascent and descent!!! My muscles still ache, my legs and even my shoulders (I carried a backpack with water and food on them) are sore! In order: Nick picked us up with Katya in Sea Point, we bypassed the center and left the car in the parking lot at the Cecil Rhodes memorial. The memorial is beautiful. Who is Cecil Rhodes? I surely mentioned him while describing Kirill's story about Kimberley. This man made his living searching for diamonds, and the mining in the Big Hole was already completely finished under his leadership. Cecil Rhodes owned many lands in the country, including in Cape Town. The university and surrounding areas belonged to him. After his death, Rhodes bequeathed his wealth and lands to the state. He would certainly have become a national hero here if he had black skin. But as it is... well, everyone knows and remembers him anyway. At the memorial, Katya and I parted ways. She said she wouldn't go up the mountain, called James, and asked him to pick her up. And Nick and I set off on our journey. There was almost no mood for it until we reached the summit. Climbing was hard and not very interesting. As it turned out, the interesting part was waiting for us at the top. We didn't even take any photos until we climbed up. What surprised me was that from the highest point we even saw the "Cape of Good Hope"! I never thought you could see it from the center of Cape Town, from one of the mountains! Nick even declared that, in his taste,

Through thorns to the stars

A little girl in front of you lives in a rural village in Kazakhstan, dreaming of walking by the sea and see the World. There were frequent talks in her family of teachers about their child's future. The girl understood she had to work hard and wished only one thing – to get to a better school. She was accepted, but her parents could not let her go far from home. A year passed by, yet hope never waned, the fire in her eyes so bright. In 9th grade, she took an Olympiad, “iQanat.” The process went smoothly, yet none of the competitors knew what came after it. In August, selection began, and she won an invitation to the prestigious school. Forty-five thousand children took part, and she was one of the just two hundred accepted. She runs to her parents to announce her victory and say that she is going to Borovoe – the pearl of Kazakhstan, a fantastic mountain land harboring mysterious wonders. Her parents were proud and happy, but they still could not let go. The girl quietly packs up her most precious belongings from her room. When her parents leave, she calls a taxi and goes on her life's greatest adventure thus far. Despite the lack of permission, she went to build her bright future and develop her true self. After her arrival, she faced many challenges. She learned to make it by herself through perseverance, making her who she is now: a caring friend, a daughter to be proud of, and a role model for all the other students of this Gifted and Talented School. She found her place in academic development and an outlet for her creative arts – theatrical, prose, poetry, and music. She became a volunteer at the iQanat Olympiads and an organizer of many events like “Movie Fest” and the “Model UN.” These events shaped her leadership skills. Then, she was an intern of “The Teachers’ Lab” – a teaching professionals' website resource aimed at collating and sharing educational materials and ideas. It helped her to understand the nuances of this deeply complicated system. now, after graduating from school, she is studying at the Karaganda University named after Buketov in the first year. Programs such as Work and Travel will help to give hope and light a fire inside us. This girl, having learned this program, realized that she should not give up and she is sincerely grateful to such people who help young people see the world and gain experience. This girl is chasing a dream and building her bright future. A degree in Work and Travel program solves this problem because it allows students to develop analytical skills and be critical of the media. I want to discover the world stage from the United States. The country is rich in cultural and historical heritage, but at the same time it confidently keeps pace with modern changes. Using this experience gained in America, this girl will in the future work at the IQanat Foundation, where she once studied, and will encourage others to be more productive and responsible citizens of the world. Through thorns to the stars.
