Über den Ort

The studio preserves the working laboratory of architect Luis Barragán.

The residence stands in the Miguel Hidalgo district on land acquired just outside the historic center of Tacubaya. Luis Barragán retained this specific parcel during a career shift from real estate development to architecture, choosing to occupy the building while designing the Jardines del Pedregal subdivision. The property functioned continuously as a personal testing ground for architectural experiments until his death.

Joint stewardship belongs to the Government of the State of Jalisco and the Fundación de Arquitectura Tapatía, which maintain the interiors as an active museum and workspace for visiting architects. UNESCO inscribed the property on the World Heritage list as the sole private residence so designated across Latin America. Original furnishings remain intact alongside artworks by Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and Picasso.

Ordinary municipal tourism largely bypasses the site, leaving visits dominated by foreign architects and specialized researchers. The facade integrates into a standard residential street without commercial fanfare, reflecting Barragán's synthesis of vernacular Mexican building practices and modern design theory. Long-term residents in the quarter experience the site as a working study center rather than a crowded landmark.
