Residents living near the Apostolic Palace plan around unannounced ceremonial closures rather than casual museum visits.
Pope Sixtus commissioned the present structure within the Apostolic Palace to replace the Cappella Maggiore, an older hall dismantled after its walls began to lean. Architect Baccio Pontelli designed the space and Giovannino de Dolci directed construction, matching the dimensions of the earlier foundation. Consecrated to the Virgin Mary, the interior became the principal meeting ground for the papal household court.
Wall frescoes painted by Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, and Pietro Perugino line the lower tiers, while Michelangelo executed the vaulted ceiling and The Last Judgment altar mural. Beyond its visual art, the room maintains a resident musical ensemble, the Sistine Chapel Choir, whose liturgical repertory includes Gregorio Allegri's Miserere. Regular religious ceremonies continue to fill the space according to the papal calendar.
The hall convenes the College of Cardinals during a conclave to elect each successive pope. Technicians fit a temporary chimney through the roof to signal voting outcomes, burning paper ballots to send white smoke for a completed election or wet straw to release black smoke when ballots fail. Although cardinal electors now sleep across the grounds at Domus Sanctae Marthae, they still return here to cast every official vote.
