Piazzale Michelangelo: was in der Nähe ist, wie man hinkommt und wann man fährt · 2026

Residents in Oltrarno treat the climb up to the terrace as a daily fitness routine rather than an excursion, taking the steps before the evening crowds arrive to take over the railings.

Über den Ort

Piazzale Michelangelo occupies a terrace on the southern hills of the Oltrarno with panoramic views across the urban core.

Architect Giuseppe Poggi designed the terrace during the Risanamento redevelopment of the Oltrarno while Florence functioned as the national capital. Poggi guided the tree-lined avenue of Viale dei Colli up the slopes of San Miniato to culminate at this public overlook. The dominant neoclassical loggia on the terrace was originally planned to display sculpture, commemorated by an inscribed epigraph set into the balcony.

Dedicated to the sculptor Michelangelo, the square displays bronze replicas of David alongside the allegorical figures of the times of day from the Medici Chapel. The balustrade reveals an unbroken panorama taking in Forte Belvedere, Santa Croce, Ponte Vecchio, the Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, the Bargello, and the Badia Fiorentina. For residents, the overlook marks the boundary between congested center streets and quiet hillside paths.
