Residents around Mount Zion navigate overlapping devotional claims and shifting civil access right outside the Old City walls.
The Cenacle occupies an upper floor on Mount Zion immediately south of the Old City perimeter. Christian tradition identifies the stone hall as the site where Jesus shared his final meal with the disciples. Architectural surveys connect the surviving masonry to Byzantine foundations and the vanished Hagia Sion basilica, which appears in antique mosaic cartography.
Crusader builders reconstructed the structure into a Latin abbey before custody shifted between Syrian Christians and Franciscan friars. Ottoman authorities later converted the chamber into a mosque named for the Prophet David and evicted the monastic community. The site is now administered by the Israeli Ministry of the Interior, accommodating international pilgrims alongside strict preservation rules.
