Über den Ort

Theresienwiese is a public open ground in Munich that transforms periodically into an international event venue.

The grounds sit within Ludwigsvorstadt, originating as a meadow beyond the historic city fortifications. The location received its name in honor of Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen following her royal wedding celebration with Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria. That celebration inaugurated the recurring autumn tradition of Oktoberfest, which continues to occupy the central expanse every year.

Beyond the autumn beer festival, the space hosts the seasonal Tollwood cultural gatherings in spring and winter, alongside an extensive spring flea market. Long-term residents experience sharp contrasts between festive overcrowding and the quiet emptiness of the unpaved field. When large events conclude, neighborhood routines reset, and the surrounding streets clear until the next seasonal festival assembly arrives.
