Planten un Blomen: was in der Nähe ist, wie man hinkommt und wann man fährt · 2026

Tenants living between Dammtor and the inner districts cut across the landscaped ramparts daily, trading street traffic for quiet unpaved paths on their regular cross-town commute.

Über den Ort

Planten un Blomen forms a continuous green belt over Hamburg's dismantled ramparts, translating from Low German as Plants and Flowers.

Following the destruction of the old municipal fortifications, civic planners transformed the defensive ring into continuous public parkland. The grounds absorbed terrain previously occupied by a local zoo and a dismantled cemetery. A historic plane tree introduced by botanist Johann Georg Christian Lehmann still stands beside the Dammtor railway station entrance, anchoring the northern border of the green space.

The grounds underwent ideological reshaping during park redevelopment, when landscape policies enforced the exclusive cultivation of native domestic flora. Postwar international horticulture exhibitions subsequently rebuilt the site into a contemporary civic showcase, replacing rigid botanical themes with varied open gardens. Today, the central park connects business quarters with residential neighborhoods.
