America is still here! Or my first trip abroad ever! So, Most people plan and try to spend their summer PERFECTLY. After all, summer is a sweet, three-month slice of life every year. My summer in America was the most memorable one. I had been dreaming of a trip to America since 2012, when I was a sophomore in college. Back then, my friends were already flying there for short-term summer language courses. Their impressions of America not only motivated me but also led me to take action and achieve results. After entering the university in September, I immediately registered at the International Exchange Center for the Work and Travel USA 2017 program in Almaty. We were prepared very thoroughly for the trip; we were informed and explained all the rules step-by-step, for which I am very grateful to our coordinators. Everything was planned by winter: where we would live, how we would get there, who our employer would be, and how it would all happen. And finally, after a successful interview with the consul in April and receiving my J-1 Visa, I boarded a Lufthansa plane for the first time in my life. After landing successfully at the New Jersey airport “EWR”, we went to pick up other students from New York’s “John F. Kennedy” airport. There were so many emotions inside; America was truly waiting and hadn't gone anywhere. Right then, on the way to the other airport, I felt the breath of the city, the rhythm where everyone is in a hurry and busy with their own business, where it is immediately clear that time really matters to them. After all, they say TIME IS MONEY for a reason. The grandeur of this city truly met my expectations. Everything is just like in the movies: skyscrapers, humidity, friendly people, and so much more. A city that breaks many stereotypes with its culture and population. In America, age doesn't matter; if a person wants to enter college for a bachelor's degree even after 25, it's normal for them. Back home, it would look like the person had missed their years of education. After we met the other students, we had a journey ahead to Bethany Beach, Delaware. We reached our destination on a shuttle bus from E-Point, a company that specializes in meeting and seeing off J-1 students. And here we were in Bethany Beach. We settled in, and in the morning, we went to the employer to meet the local staff of our restaurant. Everything went as planned: gifts and souvenirs from Kazakhstan, friendly attitudes, and welcoming smiles. Our team consisted of guys from Russia, Kazakhstan, Romania, and Macedonia. It was interesting to learn not only about American culture but also about Europe. Even on the busiest and hardest days, it was a lot of fun working with them.

The next day was supposed to go differently, if not for the rain! Although even the rain wasn't an obstacle for Ilona and me! We decided to meet at the well-known Apple store on Fifth Avenue. Being sure that I would get there in half an hour at most, I didn't rush. I walked to the subway and... voilà, the subway was closed! I was horrified, I didn't understand what to do... it was nonsense, to be honest. I immediately hurried to figure everything out. A woman told me that on weekends, the lines leading to Brooklyn only go to a certain station. And to get to that station, you have to take a free bus that only runs along the main streets. In my case, it was Ocean Avenue. Men at the subway station told me how to get there. It was only three blocks away from me, fortunately. I had to break all traffic rules because I saw a bus, but I wasn't sure if it was the right one. A woman was standing at the stop, I approached her and started saying: "Do you know...", to which she interrupted me and said in Russian, albeit with an accent: "Yes, you can speak Russian!". It seems my accent is much more noticeable, but I was even happy. She told me how to get to the necessary subway station and gave me a taxi number so that I could easily get to the airport the next day. Well, that's how I got to the Apple store. Ilona, it turns out, didn't know about the subway either. We were both late, but only by a little bit. I was amazed to see the queue already formed for the brand new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Before, on TV, it seemed funny to me, but... I saw it all with my own eyes. The most fun, of course, was our walk in Central Park. For $15, we rented bicycles and, like real tourists, rode along the perfect path. Crowds of people walking along the narrow paths in the park, quite a lot of other cyclists on the bike path, or just city residents jogging. The park area is huge, we stopped at the most favorite places of New Yorkers and tourists, one of them was the Jacqueline Kennedy Reservoir. A stunning place, the largest lake in the park. You can walk there forever, really, but it would take a lot of time, and we wanted to see a few more places. I enjoyed our bike ride until the small hills started, and I terribly dislike riding uphill, exclusively when it comes to a bicycle! We ignored the sign that said Hard Way, deciding that nothing difficult would be encountered on the way, oh, how wrong we were. A great workout after months of staying in America. Those in the know take a shortcut along the easy path. And yet, we were satisfied with the walk. Unfortunately, we were caught in the rain. We didn't really manage to see anything after Central Park. We ran from one cafe to another. We visited Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts, ran into shops where we bought a couple of things, and souvenirs. The choice of souvenirs in New York is very large. On Fifth Avenue, you can find not only branded boutiques but also souvenir shops, although you will have to walk quite far. That day we also visited the New York Public Library, one of the largest in the world. Inside you will find a souvenir and bookstore, you can afford whatever you want. We also visited Grand Central Terminal in New York. An impressive sight: a luxurious waiting room, columns, windows, arches. A huge number of people taking pictures against the background of this beauty, and we were no exception! But our day was coming to an end, we said goodbye and went our separate ways.

It was a period when a huge number of students were flying out. We were among them; on June 2nd, nearly 70 of us were departing. Everyone was very excited and tried to get to know each other quickly, realizing we would only spend two days in New York, yet everyone stuck together despite barely knowing one another. The mood was very positive, as some of us were flying for the first time toward independent life—even if just for a short while, it was a huge experience for them. Some were saying goodbye to family, there were many friends seeing us off, shouting well wishes for a great summer, and others were saying goodbye to their significant others. But after passing through customs, everyone felt a bit lonely for a moment, lost in thought, maybe even a little sad—perhaps starting to wonder what awaited them this summer?! But that passed quickly... Then the "selfie" phase began, photographing boarding passes, passports, and finally Instagram; that’s how our 40 minutes until boarding passed... We flew with Lufthansa, and what can I say, we liked it))) We didn't have time to get bored; there were movies, music, and a library the whole way. Students don't sleep on the plane, especially when flying to the USA. Everyone is discussing something; it's interesting to meet groupmates who didn't know all year that they were also program participants. It's good they met at the airport on the way to the USA; there were even cases where people met for the first time only on the return flight. And they were so surprised! Transfer in Frankfurt. The transfer was very convenient; we waited for only about 2 hours, quickly went through registration, spent half an hour in the waiting area, and then we were back on the plane, though not as active anymore—everyone wanted to sleep... When they announced we were approaching New York, we were fed one last time and asked to raise our seats and fasten our seatbelts. You could see the feeling of anticipation for something incredible on everyone's faces; everyone was so alert, so excited! The plane made a very soft landing, we taxied to the terminal for a long time, and slowly everyone started grabbing their carry-on luggage and moving toward the exit. John F. Kennedy International Airport is the largest international airport in the USA, located in the Queens borough in the southeastern part of New York City, 20 km southeast of Lower Manhattan. Can you imagine the traffic at the airport when everyone is waiting for permission to land or take off because there is simply no space, and an "airplane traffic jam" has formed? There were so many people at the airport, so many that it took us almost 3 hours to get through customs. Tip: If you brought fruit with you, please make sure to declare it on your customs declaration. Otherwise, you may be fined or detained until circumstances are clarified. This also applies to other products. After passing the check and collecting our luggage, we all gathered at the exit. A cool bus with a guide arrived and took us to the Hotel Pennsylvania. On the way, the guide told us about everything we saw on the road, about shops, groceries, car rentals, and even inexpensive restaurants and shopping. Hotel Pennsylvania, the location of this hotel is simply fantastic. Pennsylvania is in Manhattan, across the street from the Madison Square Garden sports complex, and was one of the most frequently booked in New York City! Times Square and the Museum of Modern Art are less than a 15-minute subway ride from the Penn Hotel. The hotel is also one block from the Macy's department store and 2 blocks from the Empire State Building. Midtown is a great choice if you are interested in landmarks, shopping, and museums. At the hotel, a girl was waiting for us at a separate reception desk with an "INTEREXCHANGE" sign. She quickly collected our passports and, calling everyone one by one, handed out room keys. May 26th, flight to America, with a layover in London. British Airways—I never thought I'd fly on such a comfortable plane. I was separated by several thousand kilometers from New York, the city I wanted to visit more than anything in life. All I had to do was fly for a few hours and my dream would become reality. The thing is, I'm terrified of flying! And once again, finding myself on a plane, I turned into the most religious person! Although, that was the only thing that helped me overcome my fear. My cross, my pendant, and a ring—a gift from my parents—were all I needed! I managed fine until London; it was only about a four-hour flight. The company was good, too—a young man who was traveling on the same program as me. He supported me as much as he could! I'm ready to be grateful for that forever! Only the smallest thing remained: crossing the Atlantic Ocean! The landing gear touched the runway, the plane began to slow down sharply... An indescribable feeling. I'm in New York! It was just John F. Kennedy Airport, but I was incredibly happy, perhaps because I was finally on the ground. My first challenge: communicating with the border officer. That's when I realized how insecure my English was; it's very difficult to orient yourself when the person standing next to you speaks English fluently. Such stress, but I managed. The airport turned out to be a difficult test for me. And all because, before the flight, I had read reviews about how luggage gets lost. And what do you think? On the baggage claim belt, I didn't find my bag. I had tried so hard, attaching identification ribbons so I could instantly find mine in a pile of black bags and make it to the last bus to Manhattan. I looked at the guys I met on the plane and at the border; they all looked happy and were standing with their luggage. And I'm a winner in life! I would have to file a report after all... and, hooray! From under a mountain of bags, a red ribbon appeared. I ran over like a scalded cat to check, and... the first test was passed, my luggage was there, I was happy, in New York—what could be worse? Nothing, right! Dasha, Anya (I'll switch to names, otherwise it will be difficult), and I ran to the exit as fast as we could. The last bus to Manhattan was at 10:45 pm; if we didn't make it, the prospect of spending an hour and a half in the New York subway or paying 52 dollars plus tips to a taxi driver didn't appeal to us. But as soon as we saw the bus standing nearby, we felt relieved. We paid only 16 dollars and in forty minutes at most, we were at Penn Station. Right next to it was our Hotel Pennsylvania, where we were offered to stay for two days under full-service, plus help with obtaining a Social Security Number and orientation for the program.
