Long-term residents near Shichahai work around the persistent crowds outside the mansion walls, timing their daily walks through the hutongs before tour buses arrive.
The estate originated in Xicheng District north of Shichahai Lake as the private residence of Heshen, a prominent court official under the Qianlong Emperor. Heshen accumulated vast personal wealth before the Jiaqing Emperor executed him for corruption and seized the estate. The crown reassigned the siheyuan compounds to Prince Qing and later to Prince Gong, whose tenure gave the property its enduring name and formal garden layout.
Following the imperial collapse, Prince Gong's grandson mortgaged the grounds to the Order of Saint Benedict. The Benedictine order invested resources to repair the decaying halls and established Furen Catholic University, which operated until foreign clergy were expelled. The property later housed an air conditioning manufacturing plant before national heritage authorities protected the complex and restored it for visitors.
