Wartime authorities opened the apartment to frame the polyglot musician as an exclusively Germanic figure before municipal custodians took control. A major municipal refurbishment expanded the structure into a dedicated cultural venue. The overhaul sparked criticism because workers dismantled the courtyard for a lift and altered the historic oak doorway.

Contractors extracted the kitchen stone flooring during the modernisation, replacing early domestic fabric with polished presentation spaces.
