Mozarthaus Vienna: what's nearby, how to get there and when to go · 2026

Tenants residing in the lanes behind St. Stephen's Cathedral navigate daily crowds outside the composer's preserved apartment to reach quiet courtyard flats.

About the place

Preserved behind the cathedral, the composer's final intact residence reveals the cost of municipal heritage overhauls.

This historic townhouse stands in the city center as the only preserved residence of the composer. Long called Camesina House after its early owners, the building retains the composer's former living quarters on an upper level. The original doorway along Schulerstraße was bricked over for a shop, routing museum entries through Domgasse.

Wartime authorities opened the apartment to frame the polyglot musician as an exclusively Germanic figure before municipal custodians took control. A major municipal refurbishment expanded the structure into a dedicated cultural venue. The overhaul sparked criticism because workers dismantled the courtyard for a lift and altered the historic oak doorway.

Contractors extracted the kitchen stone flooring during the modernisation, replacing early domestic fabric with polished presentation spaces. Multimedia exhibits now accompany period artifacts throughout the historic rooms. Beneath the museum, an excavated cellar funded with European Union support operates as a venue for public gatherings.
