Residents settling into the historic centre navigate heavy pedestrian flow across Plaza de Armas while using this stone nave as a quiet retreat from afternoon heat.
Pedro de Valdivia assigned the northeastern corner of Plaza de Armas for a church over an existing Inca tambo. Early congregants gathered at the governor house where the post office stands today before builders erected a permanent chapel. Successive earthquakes repeatedly wrecked the structure, destroying the central sanctuary and forcing repeated reconstructions under church authorities.
Bishop Juan González Melgarejo initiated a complete rebuild after seismic tremors cracked the repaired walls. Jesuit architects Pedro Vogl and Juan Hagen designed the new layout, which later came under the direction of Italian architect Joaquín Toesca. The project expanded across adjacent land purchased from the Pineda Bascuñán family, shifting the altar toward Bandera street while the main entrance remained on the square.
