About the place

Cold alpine waters and high-altitude winds define daily survival along the shoreline.

The lake occupies a vast Andean basin shared between Bolivia and Peru as the continent's largest water body by surface and volume. Its elevated waters remain slightly brackish rather than purely fresh. Cold winds keep surface water chilly throughout the year. Winter days bring sharp contrasts, pairing freezing nights with warm afternoons under clear skies, while summer generates intense afternoon thunderstorms.

Navigation here required moving prefabricated British steamships across mountain ranges in disassembled crates before assembling them on the shore. Historic iron hulls like Yavari and Yapura carried cargo and navy personnel across the boundary. Today, a specialized car float named Manco Capac connects standard rail tracks at Puno to meter rail lines at Guaqui, preserving direct cross-border freight transit.

Several historic vessels found practical second lives along the lakefront. The former gunboat Yapura now operates as a hospital vessel, while sister ship Yavari serves as moored accommodation in Puno Bay during continuing restoration work. Another steamship, Coya, functions as a lakeside restaurant. These industrial relics still float on what remains the highest navigable commercial waterway across the globe.
