About the place

Nohmul preserves the layered structural remains of a major pre-Columbian trade capital that once dominated the northern lowlands.

Nohmul translates as great mound in Yucatec Maya and represents the primary pre-Columbian administrative centre in northern Belize. Builders positioned the settlement on high ground overlooking the Hondo River to command trade routes across the eastern lowlands. The complex functioned as the regional seat of government, expanding over centuries through major architectural phases before experiencing an extended period of abandonment.

Later rebuilding introduced northern styles directly on top of older stairways, including a circular profile reminiscent of El Caracol at Chichen Itza that indicates migration from the wider peninsula. Modern infrastructure work inflicted catastrophic loss on the site when commercial road crews dismantled the massive central pyramid down to its core for gravel, making conservation and site preservation primary concerns today.
