About the place

The Royal Observatory of Belgium anchors national space geodesy and planetary research from its campus in Uccle.

Adolphe Quetelet secured royal authorization to build the state observatory, beginning construction in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode before revolutionary combat swept across the facility grounds. Jean-Charles Houzeau later directed the relocation of scientific work to Uccle to secure larger terrain and upgraded equipment. The complex operates as part of the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office.

Early weather tracking yielded the regular Meteorological Bulletin before atmospheric studies split into the independent Royal Meteorological Institute. Georges Lecointe introduced earthquake detection instruments and launched high-altitude weather balloons. The Uccle site maintains the Sunspot Index Data center, while public sky presentations run across the capital at the Brussels Planetarium in Laeken.

International observation campaigns sent Belgian astronomers to Santiago and San Antonio to document the transit of Venus. The institution also supplied photographic plates for the global Carte du Ciel sky mapping project and hosted the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams. Near the entrance gates, a statue commemorates King Baudouin, who followed observatory research as an amateur astronomer.
