Residents in Heverlee trade central city bustle for quiet park paths and daily work divided between castle studios and laboratory buildings along Celestijnenlaan.
The château stands in Heverlee parkland as a Flemish Renaissance complex built by the Croÿ family over an older medieval site and later inherited by the House of Arenberg. Traditional brick walls, sandstone window frames, and corner towers incorporate mixed Gothic and Renaissance elements. After government confiscation prompted by wartime foreign ties, the university acquired the entire estate for a sprawling science campus.
Following the linguistic division of the university, the estate became a primary campus for Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. The main building houses the Faculty of Engineering, hosting lecture halls and specialized studios for urban planning and architectural conservation. While researchers and students work inside daily, the castle remains open to the public, and the nearby former Celestine monastery operates as the campus library.
