Pearl Roundabout: what's nearby, how to get there and when to go · 2026

Residents commuting past Al Farooq Junction navigate a busy highway interchange that erased the city's former central landmark.

About the place
About the place

A major highway interchange occupies the ground where the national monument once stood.

The site originally functioned as a prominent circular junction near the financial district, the central market, and the harbour towers. At its center stood a monument formed by arched dhow sails holding a sculpted pearl above a fountain pool. The structure honored regional cooperation among Gulf nations and the island's pearling heritage, appearing on the country's highest-value coin before that coinage was withdrawn.

State forces demolished the structure following major political protests at the circle, citing the need to clear the gathering ground. Authorities subsequently removed the landmark imagery from circulation and reconfigured the entire intersection into Al Farooq Junction. Today, elevated flyovers carry transit traffic past the surrounding apartment towers, leaving no physical trace of the original monument on the roadway.
