Residents pass the preserved gatehouse of Hỏa Lò Prison on routine walks, confronting the realities of colonial incarceration and wartime captivity in the city centre.
French colonial authorities originally established the prison in Indochina to hold political prisoners under severe institutional confinement. North Vietnam later repurposed the site during the Vietnam War to detain American prisoners of war, who gave the detention complex the enduring sarcastic nickname of the Hanoi Hilton during their internment.
Following Operation Homecoming, authorities continued to use the facility to incarcerate Vietnamese dissidents. A later demolition removed almost the entire historic compound, sparing only the entrance gatehouse from destruction. That surviving gatehouse now remains open as a dedicated museum, presenting the penal history of colonial rule and wartime detention in the city of Hanoi.
