The collegiate university structure separates academic learning from centralised town planning.

Scholars leaving Oxford after conflicts with townspeople founded the institution, establishing a collegiate model that remains decentralized. The individual colleges originated as endowed fellowships rather than modern halls of residence, absorbing older unendowed hostels and shaping the physical layout of central city lanes and river bridges.
